90’s PC Gaming Appreciation Thread: Boot Disks to 3dfx Voodoo cards

This thread is to unite all of us that have had the joy of gaming on a PC in 90’s. This decade was great for console games for sure, but being on the other side, the PC side, was something special. To elimintae the risk of making a wall of text covering an entire decade. Here are some blurbs to get us stated. So lets discuss everything from boot disks to 3dfx.

Before Direct X was hatched, starting a game from a boot disk was almost required, especially if it was a Lucas Arts game. You wanted joystick/CD-ROM support, or extra memory. This is what needed to be loaded before hand. Here is a good example of what was needed to [create a boot disk](http://cd.textfiles.com/cdromgamesgdc1/GAMES/SAMDEMO/README.TXT).

Windows 95 was a huge upgrade from Windows for Workgroups 3.11 which added plug-n-play, 32-bit architecture and longer filenames.

> Microsoft Windows is a computer operating system developed by Microsoft. It was first launched in 1985 as a graphical operating system built on MS-DOS. The initial version was followed by several subsequent releases, and by the early 1990s, the Windows line had split into two separate lines of releases: Windows 9x for consumers and Windows NT for businesses and enterprises. In the following years, several further variants of Windows would be released: Windows CE in 1996 for embedded systems; Po...

I actually owned a pair of these when released. Saw the display at Computer City showing Mechwarrior 2 and had to have them. Worst $600 I ever spent.

Using a stereoscopic display and a system that tracked head movement, people willing to don the glasses and accompanying glove could experience virtual reality at home – assuming that “reality” was a mass of large polygons moving at a molasses-slow frame rate.

The glasses’ two 0.7-inch LCD screens produced a resolution of around 320 x 200, which, when released in 1995, was enough to make the EF 2000 flight simulator slightly more exciting.

Ways to play these older games.

I absolutely love this thread (Avatar quote!!). Classic PC Adventure games continue to be my favourite genre, and one I can’t wait to introduce to my little one when she’s a bit older.

I had a lot of Big Box games back in the day, sadly they have all disappeared over the years. I think between 1993 and 2000, I didn’t miss a single issue of PC Gamer. I still remember how X-Com: UFO Defense topped their “Best games of all time” list over and over and over again. Truly a classic game.

Dark Forces is the first place I ever heard one of the “Classic” scream sound effects: jump off any tall ledge. Works really well in any level where you can fall into space. That sound effect shows up all the time, but will forever be the “Dark Forces” scream to me.

I do really miss PC game boxes. Both the oversized ones and the more reasonable ones that took over around 2001 or so. For whatever reason, every time I buy one of XSEED’s Falcom releases, I kinda wish it had a fancy box. Just feels wrong without it.

I hated how big the boxes were, and it sucked how quickly expensive hardware became obsolete, but I love '90s PC gaming. Deus Ex is still my favourite game of all time (close enough to the '90s), Planescape: Torment is my top RPG, Unreal Tournament is my most played online multiplayer game, and it was the golden age for point and click adventures.

I’ve got a special place in my heart for 90s pc gaming. UT99 🙂

LinusTechTips made a video about 3dfx’s SLI rigs. It was ridiculous when he was rattling off the specs of that machine.

Well done on this thread. My personal gaming timeline went from SNES to PC and playstation 1. I didn’t have a N64 or gamecube.

I pirated a ton of games, to tell the truth. I’ve been looking to buy some of those games, starting with the wipeout series. I loved that series on PC, but now I’m buying the console versions.

Anyone remember Interstate 76? I loved it.

Lazy Game Reviews is a great youtube for this thread. He tests old gear all the time.

Yeah I mention Lazy game Reviews in the Youtube section. And Interstate 76 was amazing for the time. Played a ton of multiplayer and loved the soundtrack. Never played the sequel, never had any interest.

Interstate 76 is a game I really, really wish I could’ve played in its day. There was no way in hell it was going to run on my computer (which was a Compaq Presario CDS972… don’t ask me how I remember that.) While I never had the game, I did have Time Commando, which included a trailer on the CD-ROM… and I watched the shit out of that.

When I finally had a computer that was up to snuff, I tried the I76 Nitro Pack demo briefly and… eh, it was too late.

90’s PC gaming 😍. Going from the SNES to this was mindblowing and i skipped the N64 completely as a result. Didn’t get a PS1 until '99.

My family’s first computer was a Pentium MMX 166 mhz and i think we got it in '96 or so along with a 56k modem and internetz. Later that year i got my first 3D accelerator, the Orchid Righteous 3D. I have so many fond memories staying up late playing Quake, Mechwarrior 2, Unreal, Duke3D, Blood etc. all while chatting on ICQ. I still remember my ICQ UIN, lol.

Heroes II and III are the best strategy games ever made, and I’ll fight you to the death if you disagree.

He’s saying he’ll make more at a later date, and announce it on twitter. I don’t want to check twitter every day ☹
