CGQ uploaded an archive of a golf gaming session from yesterday. Hot Shots and PGA Tour '96, both on PS1. I’ve had a nagging feeling this past month to go out and buy Seta’s Eikou Saint Andrews on N64, and I finally bit the bullet and ordered a copy on N64 and a copy on PlayStation…only apparently I already did so a few days ago but I seriously don’t remember it. Power Golf DOES make great use of the PCEngine color palette, though. I’ll always have a soft spot for it, it’s one of the first HUCards I ever imported. ---

Finally got round to sitting down with T&E Soft Golf on Virtual Boy for an extended period of time. Played the first nine holes of Papillon Country Club before suspending my game. I really enjoyed what I played, it’s clear T&E Soft really values Golf as a sport of concentration. You’re encouraged to slowly consider each element of your tee shot before committing, and if you don’t it’s unlikely to go well - very different to the golf games from Clap Hanz and Camelot where you can largely fudge it and still stand a chance at finishing a hole with a birdie. The 3D is also fantastic and adds a lot to the non-real time environment renders. Trees aren’t just flat billboards, while the green has a sense of depth to it which makes watching the ball land, and roll around on it, rather mesmerising for what it is. The 3D in this is much better than the 3DS Mario Golf game - a sad realisation. I also ordered a copy of Miracle of Waialae Extra 36 Holes on Saturn. I hope the rendering performance is better than Virtual Hydlide haha. ---

Now that I have the 32X hooked up again, I think I need some Fred Couples in my life. Has anyone here played it? Reviews I’ve found seem to like it, but of course note that it’s only 36 holes. It _is_ supposedly Fred’s 36 favorites though and it sounds like that counts for something. @matt, any experience with it? ---

When I procure one, I will definitely write it up. I want to look locally before I spring for one on Ebay. Man, 32X games have gone up! I feel like such an idiot for not buying more of them even just a few years ago. Most of the games they could barely even give away. It’s insane. ---

My copy of Minna no Golf 2 (Everybody’s Golf 2) arrived today. I played the first course on Tour Mode twice this evening. It’s almost crazy how much of what I love about the series was present in Clap Hanz’s first game, right down to the controls setup and the attention to detail in the presentation, the game looks scrumptious all around really, lovely natural environments with smooth contours, great texture design, lens flare, tense camera angles… …and the attention to detail is really impressive. If it rains on one hole you’ll likely find a rainbow waiting for you when the sun comes out in the next. If your ball spins after landing on the green it’ll leave skid marks behind. And if you’re putting in the rain the ball leaves behind a trail on the green. Like @matt mentioned, the Japanese version has a nonstandard way of communicating the greens, you have to look at a terrain arrow next to the wind arrow. It honestly makes my blood boil at times but I’m hoping I just need practice. Probably only need to take into consideration the arrow’s direction and the distance from the hole but it’s still quite difficult to visualise which direction to start your putt from. ---

Minna no Golf 2 is really quite excellent. Tour mode has you compete in four tournaments, one for each season, and you need to score enough points by the end of the season to rank up. It’s very possible to get the hang of the putting system, while at the start of Amateur Tour Mode I finished 18th with a score of +7, by the end I was 1st with a score of -5. Also started Eikou no Saint Andrews on PS1, which is janky but in a good way…maybe. Need to give it a serious look but the first hole I played was surprisingly enjoyable despite the low framerate and unfathomable controls. **Edit:** So I started Seta’s original N64 release of Eikou no Saint Andrews today and the difference between it and its subsequent PS1 port is readily apparent. You can tell the original game was designed around the N64 pad. Being able to change the view point with the C-buttons is liberating, but it’s the swing controls that make the biggest difference. On N64 you pull the analogue stick back to simulate the apex of your swing, before letting go of the stick to hit your shot in time with the desired impact reading. It‘a rather fun and must have been unprecedented for its time given it’s an early N64 title. It must also be noted that the graphics and framerate are significantly better on the N64 title, as usual ports between the two systems rarely end up well when a game has been designed thoroughly around one of them to begin with. One nice touch is you can pre-set a mode to occupy the second menu option, meaning it’s very possible to get into a game in less than ten seconds after switching on the N64. Very impressive. ---
