This thread reminded me I have a couple lying around. DK jr was a cheap pick up in the 90’s as it didn’t have a battery cover so just got around to ordering a replacement off of eBay today. Might look into doing a bit of screen restoration as they have some scratches.

Love these things, real marvels of design and engineering.

I got this one for my eighth birthday, one of my favorite gift ever, it was like a Ferrari to me (still have the Super 8 recording of this day).
I’ve played it for years and never had another G&W, never really wanted another one in fact, I was so happy with this one.

Game & Watch Gallery 2 was one of my first video games I ever owned alongside Pokémon Blue. I didn’t actually understand what it was supposed to be at the time. I honestly thought it was full of mock-ups of hypothetical games rather than a way to reproduce old classics.

Same! I remember loving the sprites in the Chef game, but not really appreciating what it was about beyond chasing high scores. Seems like a good time to return to the series.

Did you ever get around to playing this? Interested in your thoughts…

In lieu of a response from @bobble I’ve been listening to the Gallery 3 soundtrack on loop.

This is one of Noriko Nishizaka’s only credits. She suffered a fate familiar to many working at ghost developers like Tose, forever anonymous.

At least we can be grateful for three (!) brilliant Donkey Kong Jr. tracks, and the incomparable Mode Select.

Chiptune at its best!

Oh yeah I’ve played it a bunch! Amazing game, thank you for the rec. I’ve considered getting a real G&W of it - I think the most available version has Mickey Mouse. I’ve never played a real G&W and always thought LCD stuff sucked based on the Tiger games I played in the 90s, but the Gallery games really reveal how deep these simple ideas can be.

I might bust the cart out this weekend!!

Yes, the other version is a rare regional variant.

I play Gallery 3 on 3DS these days. Cracked 2k on Egg:

Picked up some of the GB cartridges in Japan a few years back but never got round to playing.

Which games would you recommend I check out? I think there were some weird differences with the European/American releases as well, in terms of GBC transition and games included.

If you only play one, play Gallery 3. It’s one of Nintendo’s best games.

As said above, I play 3 on 3DS. The remakes of Egg and Turtle Bridge are great. Greenhouse and Mario Bros. are also fun. My favourite thing about Donkey Kong Jr. is the music.

I have 1 and 2 on Game Boy. Nice compilations. 2 is the transitional title. The Japanese version is monochrome and the Western versions are colourised. They were delayed by over a year to release alongside the Game Boy Color.

There are two other titles that released either side of the aforementioned trilogy. The early one only released in Europe and Australia. It’s skippable. Gallery Advance/4 released in Europe, Australia and North America, eventually releasing in Japan on Wii U. Can’t comment on this one.

The game lineups don’t vary across regions.

2000 is really great!! I put up ALMOST 700 and felt exhausted / exhilarated! I’m playing on an Analogue Pocket but I’m interested in playing on a DMG or Pocket in b&w just to see it!

Found the cart and took it out with me today…great weather - perfect for the GBC!

To my surprise though, the battery has run dry on it. I guess we are eight years on from when the early 90s carts I was buying arrived with dead batteries.

Sad times. I tried playing on the Analogue Pocket since save states are an alternative to saving, but the D-Pad isn’t well suited to games like Egg.

Loved what I played of Egg, though, especially how the face buttons work. Very smart. It’s also neat how there’s different assets in the game depending on whether it’s played on GBC and GB.

Game looks great in monochrome…
