WE’RE BACK! I’m here to announce that @fydo and I have something in the works that I’m very excited about, and I hope to be able to post some progress images and some teaser stuff soon. For now, I’m going to start running these battles here, until the site is completed.
To kick things off, I’d like to start with something I hope everyone can enjoy.
WEEK 27 & 28 Game: Shinobi Platform(s): SMS Challenge Type: High Score Game Details: Full Game When: Feb 12th - Mar 1st, 2020
I’ve updated the website with the new game, let’s get killing!
Good luck everyone, please submit your scores via screenshot or video by replying directly to this post!
RULES
Competitions last two weeks, close on Sunday night @ midnight.
Post screenshots in this thread as proof.
The winner from the previous week chooses the next game to play.
You cannot choose twice in a row. 2nd place will choose if someone wins two weeks in a row.
If there’s a tie, the person that submitted the high score first gets to choose.
Games must be high score compatible (think “arcade style scores” like Pac-Man, or Spy Hunter, not Super Mario).
Emulation is okay (MAME is often the best for high scores).
No save state manipulation (pausing to take a break is fine though).
Submit scores as soon as you get them! To keep the competition rolling and fair, do not hold on until the last moment to submit.
Points will be awarded for the entrants, based on the position finished for the week. This is to encourage wider participation, and the points will be posted each week as well as on the website.

Overall, we should keep it simple. This is just a good time, not a crazy official high score competition! Game plays should ideally be short and fun so people that can’t invest hours into this can still compete. Obviously we are working on a trust based system here, so don’t ruin it for the others!
That jump is pretty brutal unless you have specifically saved the levitation magic for it.
It always makes me think of a conversation I had with my grandma 30 years ago. I had showed her the game and she said she liked it. I thought she was just being nice. Later on, I talked to her on the phone, and she had bought a Sega and Shinobi for herself and mentioned being stuck on that jump. I was amazed that a woman born in the 1920s actually liked and was playing it. She was awesome (RIP).
Also, a strange thing about Mandara. It’s easier to beat with shuriken than the gun. If you play the game perfectly up to the boss, you will have the gun. But for some reason throwing shuriken is faster.
I died facing Mandara, as usual. And I lost a life fighting the helicopter, because I completely forgot how you were supposed to beat it, and the fiftieth ninja coming out of it finally got me
I was playing on the mega drive because I couldn’t be bothered to plug the master system, but damn I forgot how rough the psg music was! I only had my console modded for FM a few years ago, but since then it seems I completely forgot about the original sound of that game.
Speaking of SMS Shinobi music, it always bothered me that it was missing one of the great tracks from the arcade. What’s weird is that it was discovered years later that the track is in the SMS game’s code. Who knows why they left it out. It appears in Alex Kidd in Shinobi World slightly sped up, though (no FM there, unfortunately)
It is indeed a flat screen broadcast monitor. Its a 17" JVC DTV 2008 Model. I have two of them but only currently have this one in use. Sadly since these models are so new they utilize “VIDEO” mode so have to use an Extron RGB device with most consoles that don’t have 480i or above.
Getting a bit better at the special stages so can occasionally get the tornado magic to bypass that annoying jump but anything after that is an unknown to me on SMS as never really got past it before.
On my last run got a weird glitch where I could not rescue one of the kids:
