Do you think it’s a side effect of then making the games easier?
Going back to Yoshi’s Island SNES it’s quite a difficult game.

I haven’t played enough of Woolly World to make a comparison. I’ll try to put some time in to Woolly World soon. Yoshi’s Crafted world is too short for $40 in my opinion.

My friend wanted to play Borderlands the Pre Sequel in co op. It’s a decent game but I’m not a fan of the moon mechanic at all.

Yeah, I really likes BL1 and 2, but the low gravity thing just didn’t work well for the series imo. I’m excited for BL3, but if it’s not on Steam, I won’t be paying for it.

Halo MCC (XB1)
Destiny 2 (XB1)
Shenmue II (XB1) - I guess this is both modern and retro
Retro:
Substation (Atari STE/Falcon) - Old school FPS. Graphics are kinda basic, but the game has a ton of atmosphere and its kinda unique in the early FPS genre.
Hostages (Atari ST) - Old school team combat sim along the lines of Rainbow Six, before Rainbow Six was even a thing.
Defender 2000 (Atari Jaguar) - Old school Jeff Minter shmup craziness.

Yeah, I think it is. Yoshi seems like it’s now positioned to be an alternative to the Kirby games. Crafted World just seems a world apart from the original EAD-developed Yoshi’s Island. That game had a lot of energy to it.

I agree. Its 6-10 hours for an average play through. I would say its worth it for $20-$30 but not $60.

Just beat my first game of the year, yay! Desperados for the PC, a pretty great strategy/tactics game in the Commandos-vein. Took me like four months though, as I havent really had much time for games recently, but was awesome to complete it. Its the perfect thinking mans game imo, where you have to carefully analyse the level design, enemy placement, movement, how to spend your resources etc. And its not as hard as Commandos. Hightly recommended!

To be fair, I wouldn’t mind a 6 hour game at a high price if it does everything it needs to do in that time while being remarkable.
I spoke to my friend who picked it up at launch and he said he felt the same way about this as Kirby Star Allies - it’s just kind of there, and it doesn’t stand out in any way. That’s a shame, new hardware is normally an exciting time for the stalwart series, but I haven’t been excited about either Yoshi or Kirby since DS with Canvas Curse and Touch ‘n Go.

I agree with your friend. Both titles are average but fun can be had. If they price point for both was around $20-$30 I would be more inclined to recommend it. I would still play Yoshi & Kirby over Dangerous Driving any day. It’s the only game to make me feel indifferent in several years.

So yesterday being Easter Sunday, of course I was playing Contra: Hard Corps! I also put in some serious time with Shinobi III. Both were on original hardware through the RetroTINK-2X on the HDTV.
I am consistently amazed at how easy the setup is to get a fantastic picture from my Sega CDX onto the HDTV with no lag. It genuinely makes these games feel fresh to me again. It’s like seeing them again for the first time, and the sound quality is no joke either. I did buy a component cable from Retrovision to facilitate the best possible picture through the 2X but even then I’m about $180 out of pocket for a fantastic Genesis experience in 2019 with only plugging things in to get it working.
Hard Corps is excellent. It has the immediacy of later Contras like Shattered Soldier while also retaining the feel of the NES and arcade games. It’s got a lot more set pieces in it that make it feel as much like playing an action movie as any Contra game did before or after. The character roster is mildly ridiculous… a wolf, with a gatling gun arm, wearing shades… of course! The short robot with the wacky mace-like weapon… it’s just all over the map with its crazy but each of the characters has different weapons and different charm. I’m going to play until I finish it, which I suspect will take awhile… it is very unforgiving like every Contra game before and after.
Shinobi III is still so damn impressive. To me it’s the anonymous Shinobi since Yuzo isn’t there for the soundtrack but it’s possibly the best of them all. Joe rides a horse and friggin’ surfs! How can you not adore that? The little brain dudes that attack you in Body Weapon…gruesome, and yet perfect. It really is a tour de force for the Genesis. I’m not sure the series ever came close to as great as that game is even though PS2 Shinobi is definitely a great entry.
