Impressive visual effects in old games

That animation would still impress today - almost wish Acid on PlayStation (that weird virtual ball throwing game) was as slickly programmed and animated as this!

Been playing the Switch version of Baroque - Baroque Original. It’s a very faithful recreation of the Saturn game, loving it so far.

Earlier in the thread @gravitone pointed out Tomb Raider’s downgraded lighting after it was in development for PlayStation, and it reminded me of how great the atmospheric lighting was in the original Saturn version of Baroque game compared with its later PlayStation port.

Only today I realised I linked two videos of the Saturn game, not one Saturn and one PlayStation video…Let’s put that right!

As you can see, the PlayStation version is extremely bright and flat by comparison. The pop-in sticks out a lot more, but what’s worse is the absence of the original game’s film noir-like atmosphere, there’s no longer the threat of an enemy appearing out of the darkness, and the nerve tower’s creepy furniture lacks contrast.

Surprised no one in this thread mentioned Asterix & Obelix XXL for GBA.

It’s a full-blown 3D platformer!

Same development duo, but they must be reusing a lot of techniques and potentially code from V-Rally 3 which I had on GBA as a kid and remember it blowing my mind. Very similar looking.

On the subject of GBA V-Rally 3, it’s interesting to see the two approaches taken by different developers. V-Rally 3 opts for a 3D track with 2D sprites for cars, while Colin McRae 2.0 opts for a mode7 track with a 3D model for its car, but a much more advanced physics simulation for it.

The latter game was more entertaining to play.
