My spine hurts just reading that.
Those are handsome, I saw an RCA Colortrak the other day that looked like this and I had to just stop and stare a minute!
I know, now from experience, that the 36" fv310 is 225-250.
Speaking of which, I finally finished repairing the stand;
Happy I went with vinyl but wish I tried reapplying a third time since it looks great but any little imperfection/dust shows hard and I could have done better. Was such a pain to sand down after pulling my first application that I just wanted to be done with it though. Also got the edge banding on and a strip of vinyl on that, will post about it when I actually get to the real show, the god damn TV that goes on top of it all.
Kinda outside the scope of this thread/forum already I guess…
Flat screen CRTs are much heavier than the same sized curved ones.
Also how the hell do you even move that thing.
Forklift.
Love seeing things repaired and restored, great work on that corner!
Nice work! That looks great.
That does look sweet, that’s the first time I’ve ever seen someone invest in a stand like that. Makes me sad knowing all the custom CRT stands that are hacked up now.
In other news, the 40" Mitsubishi worked, and had a very good picture! Not perfect, but it was good enough for me to go ahead and buy it. I have some concerns about sharpness but hopefully I can fix that once I get it home. Once I can figure out how to get it there that is!
Quick SMW shot for reference.
Damn. Great find!
Look how tiny that GCN controller looks in comparison.
Wow, looks awesome! What a great find!
The size of that gives me some nostalgia! My parents had a huge crt that I used to play SMW on (Unfortunately it was RF only though)
Nice. What a get. You can probably address that ringing via tinkering once you get it home. A convex screen of that size is certainly something else. Amazing.
Wow, that actually looks way better than I expected it to. Should be able to get that dialed in really nicely. Nice find for sure! 40"!! That’s gotta be the top end for size, before you have to go rear-projection.
I sure hope so, it has a definite issue there, but I’m sure it’ll clean up nice!
@panopticblue Same here, we had a 36" Zenith when I was a kid (also RF-only like @Vespa ) and it never looked very good. After that big Sony turned out to be so worn, I just had an association with big TV = bad picture. This Mitsubishi is turning that around though!
Th same store also had a Sharp 27" in there with component, but I have never really heard anyone talk about Sharp CRTs. Anyone have any experience with them?
As long as it’s in good condition, I’m sure it’s worth a look.
There’s almost bits of the title screen lost below the horizon of that magnificent tube.
With way too much fucking effort;
God damn asshole cigarette burn on my hardwood.
And finally time to get to work;
Fun fact: Found out the casters/wheels on the stand may not be stock since the manual for it doesn’t have any mention of them. Funner fact: I found that out after looking for info on them when one of the treads on one of them cracked and busted apart when rolling it across the floor. Something to deal with later, or when it falls over I guess since I really want to check the screen out.
Double post, fuck da police.
Best I think I can do;
Bottom of the screen I can make pretty much a straight line but top has a bowing that I don’t really know how to do anything about. Also screen has a bit of unevenness going on vertically when all the adjustments that I could use only do horizontal. Oh well, not looking for perfect.
This is also the top of the screen when I bring it down. That is moved below the border by a bunch and it just hard stops there Haven’t found a way around that either.
Time for some actual testing, Heaven or Hell;
I think it looks pretty good! The grid is a blessing and a curse. It’s made me notice things I never would have otherwise. A screen that large, I think it will work out great…just don’t move soon, lol.
Yeah, there are some problem wavey areas that I’d love to be able to fix but I’m not stressing it too much. Geometry is never going to be perfect on any CRT. The only thing that has me really worried is the discoloration on the top left and now noticed it on the mid lower left when playing a few things.
Also got to decide whether to fix the screen size to 240p or 224p. Seems alot of the ps2 games I’m playing fit better with 224, that Guilty Gear one being about the only one that went all the way to the top of the set screen of 240p.
The other issue with crts, how different the screen areas were system to system and even game to game. I remember for example how the ps1 square games would cut off a big chunk of the top of the screen when other ps1 games would use the same area.
