Thank you, replacing the belt doesn’t seem as bad as I expected. Would definitely want the extra video options you mentioned, have bookmarked the post for future reference.
Thought I’d play some tmnt tonight.
Things aren’t going so well.
Lost a turtle in the first 30 seconds because I got ran over

Is it possible to beat the Stage 4 boss in Ghosts 'n Goblins with the axe weapon? Is it possible to beat him at all?
What do you folk think of Double Dragon II (NES)? Didn’t realise the NES version was a separate game to the arcade, I’m intrigued.
Also: NES or Famicom?
One of the best Beat em up’s on the NES if you ask me. Had a blast playing it with my Dad when I was a kid. It was a huge step up from the original because 2 players could play at the same time.
Cheers, I’ll give it a go. Just not quite sure whether to go NES or Famicom (via 3DS virtual console), apparently the Famicom version is harder at the same difficulty setting. But on NES, they restrict how far you can play if you pick easier difficulties?
Edit: Just realised it’s on Nintendo Switch Online, I can try both
We’re on!
On a related note, I’m surprised NES emulation on 3DS was so negatively received compared with Nintendo Switch Online’s. Putting the Switch’s emulation into CRT filter mode (4:3) and comparing both Balloon Fight and Zelda II and I’m not noticing a vastly different image, and there’s minimal input lag in both.
The reaction was more down to having to re-buy NES games that people had already bought on Wii Virtual Console, and the limited selection through most of the system’s life.
Yeah, there was that, but I specifically meant the reaction to the emulation quality itself. But then again the majority opinion probably favours pixel perfect 8:7 and the colours presented “raw”, so Nintendo’s approach, with no options (unlike GB VC), was always going to be criticised. Especially as you point out people would have been re-buying the games if they’d previously bought them on Wii VC.
I don’t think 3DS VC was widely criticised for its emulation. Maybe you’re thinking of the Wii U? Because that had some very baffling issues with its NES emulation, like a blurry filter that you couldn’t deactivate (not a CRT filter, just… blur) and 50Hz versions in Europe. At least the latter was fixed via updates after people flooded the Miiverse with complaints .
NES emulation on 3DS VC was okay. Not spectacular, not terrible. Just okay. Sound is quite a bit off though.
I was one of those campaigning for 60Hz F-Zero. It was amazing that they listened!
Me too hah, was very surprised that they listened. Seemed very un-Nintendo-like at the time.
Yeah, might have been, Wii U really was a miss, I still don’t understand why they didn’t just launch the games via Wii Mode instead considering the library they had built up there.
There was a lot of bizarre design choices with the Wii mode in general. They really crippled the Wii U’s design to achieve one of the most awkward examples of BC ever seen.
It wasn’t worth the trade off anyway, but if that was so important then they really should have executed it more seamlessly.
3DS’s BC with DS should have been the model. Just have things launch from the same UI.
Yeah, 3DS booting into different firmware per-game worked great, from what I understand they went with Wii Mode for security reasons, but it really crippled the longevity of the Wii software library. Even today you can still buy DSiWare games off the 3DS eShop, but everything Wii got left behind.
Speaking of which, I hadn’t realised Summer Carnival ‘92 Recca made it on to virtual console: https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/NES/Summer-Carnival-92-RECCA-790679.html
Whoever went after licenses are Nintendo has a keen eye.
While the game’s lead designer went on to work at Cave, is this game worth checking out at least as a historical curio? Does the game stand out compared with some of the vertical scrolling shooters on PC Engine?
You know I didn’t know about this…
I highly recommend Recca. It’s amazing on a technical level what the programmers pulled off with the Famicom, it feels like a PC Engine game.
Another game I was surprised to find on the 3ds eshop was The Mysterious Murasame Castle. That game is great.
