That would be your tag for life on the old GAF.
am i drunk? no but it was the damnedest thing
RGB: it’s just better with composite™
I just got something very silly.
Was cheap, untested. Some guy got it in a lot and had no CRT.
Wasn’t working, so I cracked it open, found a broken PCB. Glued it back up, repaired the traces and gave everything a good clean with PCB cleaner, cleaned the lenses and mirrors with alcohol. Now working perfectly!
It works as headphones (plug in via headphone jack or can piggyback off the NES AV out) as well as a light gun, with speak to fire. Have to speak pretty loudly to fire but works. The laser sight which is projected onto the blue thing is a pretty cool touch.
Laser invasion needs it really because you use the pad as well as the ‘gun’, but otherwise it’s essentially a hand free voice activated Zapper.
Awkward and silly but another Konami peripheral added to the set!
This is super cool. Had no idea it existed.
i swear i saw an ad for it, but never once saw it in the wild? that’s awesome that you got & repaired it Dlo, more awesome still that it seems functional with some yelling!
god, i had IR sticks from that era that seemed less responsive. i love finding older weird peripherals and seeing how they actually work, like i’d die if i found a sega activator.
I only knew about this because of this classic AVGN segment:
(timestamped to 6:42 in case the link doesn’t work)
Fantastic! Another piece for the Konami collection. This only works with this one game, right?
Works with all Gun/Zapper games.
Essentially you can play Duck Hunt hands free, which works fine but is silly (saying fire to shoot) and isn’t really necessary. But Laser Invasion requires controlling your helicopter with the control pad while also shooting with the gun, so a hands free ‘gun’ is needed by the design.
Hilarious segment!
I had no idea this existed and wanted to share it here. Looks like there is an extended fami to NES converter available from Muramasa. What makes this one different is that it is already wired to pass through expansion audio and you can use it to hook up a Famicom Disk System!
I had a NTSC to PAL converter like that back in the day, but with two cart slots to use the CIC from the PAL cart.
Watched it, cool.
What is weird is that Famicom is old enough to have vintage documentaries about it…
Finally got round to watching the documentary, some really good anecdotes in there. The one that caught me by surprise most was Mizuguchi Tetsuya talking about Nakayama Miho no Tokimeki High School. Not only did I have no idea Nintendo R&D1 and Square collaborated on a bishoujo game, but calling that telephone number in the real world only to have it be linked to the game world must have been mindblowing, especially since this was before computers were mainstream.
Looking up that game, I also didn’t realise there was some sort of online leaderboard functionality for FDS games, very cool.
Now that I’ve got a CRT again I’m finally looking at getting the Famicom I’ve always wanted.
But I didn’t realise only the rather ugly AV Famicom supported composite output. Does anyone have any good tips toward getting composite output from more beautiful hardware options (basically that rich burgundy and gold brushed metal…)?
Yes, do not buy the composite modded original famicom models on eBay. I made that mistake and the video quality was messed up - the colors were too pale and there were some serious jailbars.
If anything, buy one and have a trusted modder make the change for you if you do not want to do it yourself.
With that said, I don’t think the Famicom AV is ugly, (
) just not quite as pretty as the original.
Similar to how the North American NES/SNES isn’t as cool looking as the Japanese originals, they still have an iconic look of their own that some people like. (Trying to convince myself that my consoles still look cool even though I know they’re not as cool as the Japanese models).
Twin Famicom, surely?
Oh yea, that has AV output too. (Still not as sexy as the original Famicom though)
The original Famicom is ugly and only way it looks good is when stacked with the disc system.
