PS1 Appreciation/Collectors Thread of Ugly-Ass Polygons

Brightis is a game I wanted to play so bad because of who it was from, and I’m probably better off having not played it at the time. Still always meant to go back and play it because of my love for Quintet.

Yeah, I think if we played it on release it would have been very difficult not to compare it to the N64 Zelda games, not that Brightis does itself many favours in inviting comparisons with those games.

Today it’s a lot easier to detach it from those games, and while it is rather one-note it’s (so far) been unique enough to hold my attention.

Saw this being posted around and pre-ordered it. I’d like to see it auto switch out virtual cards for discs as well, right now it seems to only do that for ODEs.

Know it’s a minor thing but I just wish it looked more like a standard memory card. When I’m getting new stuff to use with my old consoles I’d like them to fit in with the console.

I saw this yesterday too. I’m interested, but will probably wait to see reviews.

It’s crazy how some memory cards, looking at you Vita, are terrible and yet my og ps1 cards from 1995 still work fine and have my og saves.

Yeah I have a bunch of PS1 memory cards and like using them. They’re fun! I will probably still use them.

But it would be handy to have the ability to manipulate saves more easily via an SD card or a WiFi interface, and of course there are some games where being able to just create a ton of saves and not worry about space would be useful.

I love this idea but it’s a bit of an eyesore. I’ll also wait for reviews.

That said I’m on the beta firmware for the PSIO at the moment and there’s an excellent memory card manager coming that will allow copying saves to and from the SD card.

Price is now £59.99

I’ve been watching development of this in Twitter. I believe it’s open source and so cases will vary by supplier? maybe something different.

I think you are getting a price with VAT included. At least here in Canada I had to pay £49 + shipping.

Ah!

I’m intrigued why it creates 8 VMCs per game?

Really glad to see more products coming out to future proof old systems. I’m good for now, but someday I could see myself needing this when my memory cards kick the bucket.

Great thread of over 100 Japan-exclusive PlayStation gems:

If you’d rather read it away from Twitter, or download as a PDF I have you covered:

Yeah it is a bit… the clear one is better looking at least.

Krikey that’s a lot to spend on a memory card. You can buy working OG ones all day for five bucks around here.

I have like 7 or 8 OEM memory cards and a couple third party ones I had as a kid.

But it’d be useful to have something like this for a variety of reasons, not just the “tons of memory card space” but also backing up saves, loading saves downloaded from the internet, modifying save files, etc. I already have the OEM memory card to usb adapter for PS3 but this would just make it a bit more seamless.

Yeah that’s true, very good points.

How are those third party memory cards on amazon? I’m trying to start getting into PS1 via my PS2, and was wondering if there was anything I needed to look out for.

I may be going a bit overboard but I’m buying ALL the ps1 games I’ve been meaning to pick up for years thanks tops store closer.

First two games I tried out were Einhander and RayTracers. Either I’ve gotten bad at games or all these games are brutally hard,

Einhander is hard from what I heard.

Been getting into PS1 RPGs for the first time after largely ignoring them for… decades (man, that’s hard to wrap my head around). I have now been drawn in by a great experience with the FF7 Remake and seeing some of the artwork in these game,s which is truly impressive. You can tell these were the AAA releases of the day.

I started with the “Un-Worked Designs” hack of Lunar: SSSC and loved it. This hack restores many of the stat changes that were made to the US version, reducing grind overall while retaining the localization. I can’t think of a better intro to JRPGs in general (aside from maybe Pokemon). Simple battle system that never overwhelms, with enough depth to keep you from cruising through on auto-pilot. All the characters were very likeable as well, (Kyle and Jessica were the stand-outs) and the story was pretty good and well paced so I never lost track of the current goal.

Next I’m looking to finish a playthrough of Final Fantasy Tactics (got 47 hours in and realized I had some serious grinding to do so I dropped it). Still deciding on restarting with an ‘improvement’ hack like Prime or FFT complete since I have completely forgotten where I was and what I was doing at the current point in the game.
