Late to the party on this but I found this this old post by FBX illuminating on the way art assets are treated on the PS2 with regards to scaling and filtering: https://www.patreon.com/posts/woes-of-ps2-33247400
That’s interesting… I see the same company has a full replacement adapter too.
I think I’d rather mod the stock one, but on their site they only show a 2.5" drive plugged in. Does it support only 2.5" drives, or will it work with 3.5" too?
I’m going to install it over the weekend so I’ll check 2.5" and 3.5" and snap a couple of pictures
Awesome, thanks
3.5" drive will work fine too.
If you install this board in the OEM network adapter you retain network functionality, the full replacement adapter has no network function.
Awesome, thanks. I’ll pick up the conversion board then, and modify my stock adapter.
Was refurbishing some consoles and found a ps2 I had in storage. It was actually in amazing condition so I decided to try out a bunch of different games on it. I somehow ended up playing it for like 3 hours.
As I was going through my game library I came across a game called stretch.
This might be the weirdest game I’ve ever played
I have no idea how it got released.
Stretch Panic? (Freak Out) yes I had this back in the day. it’s bonkers I struggled with the controls too much and got rid of it. Perhaps a rare misstep from Treasure?
A game consisting exclusively of boss monsters. You control Linda, a girl with a demonically possessed scarf on a mission to exorcise your twelve demonically possessed sisters. In order to be allowed to unlock magic doors behind which you find the demons to fight, you need to collect points by grabbing the behinds of extremely big, extremely large chested ladies!!! Practically everything in this game can be grabbed and twisted.
Played some more ps2 games.
Decided to give Kings Field 4 a try. 30 seconds into the game I saw a green herb. I went to pick it up and the floor collapsed forcing me to fall into a lava pit and die.
Man, that game… I didn’t get very far. It’s really cool to see all the influences that would make Demon’s Souls so great, but holy hell is it unforgiving.
Sounds fun as hell. Never played that series but I love stuff like that (within reason).
Posted this in my Retro Core thread but just in case you don’t read that thread, I’ve posted it ere too. PS2 fans will probably like this one.
I got mine today and installed it. Very nice little piece of kit.
It’s very easy and quick to install, and there is no cutting, so it’s completely reversable.
It fits 2.5" and 3.5" drives no problem.
Appreciate this, the PS2 Sega Ages releases and their differences largely went unnoticed outside of Japan and I’m still unfamiliar with the lineup.
Do you know why there’s such a big difference in visual cohesion across the games’ 3D visuals? Some of them look like a great fit for the original 2D artwork, while others look as dreadful as the modern updates included in Taito Memories and Namco Museum Battle Collection. Shudder
I’m likely not 100% on this but I think D3 made volumes 1-14 which were remakes, then Sega took more control over the project and worked with multiple devs including M2 to produce direct ports. HG101 used to have a huge article on every release but unfortunately looks like it’s gone now for whatever reason.
Got the itch to play some more ps2 last night. I decided to bein out an old small crt and it’s kind if shocking how good ps2 games look on this thing even through composite.
100% it took me countless hours of tinkering with an OSSC to realise that the PS2 really is a 480i console and will always look better on a CRT.
I’m running mine via component and that is such a dramatic increase over the composite I grew up with that I’m falling in love with the library all over again.
Found out today that the latest versions of OPL come with built in pademu driver.
Plugged in a cheap bluetooth dongle from aliexpress, synced my ds4, and I’m good to go.
Only downside is having to use a pluged in dualshock 2 to first boot OPL from the main menu, but I could make a bootable disc to get around that. It feels great to use a modern controller with the ps2.
You can sync two controllers, rumble support is included.
I’ve got mine wired up to a 480p EDTV through component, and it does a surprisingly good job at deinterlacing the 480i games. But it really shines with 480p supported titles. Soul Calibur III looks phenomenal.
I have my chipped PS2 set to boot wLaunchELF, which autoboots OPL after a few seconds if I don’t press any buttons. Would that help your situation?
