Retro AV |OT| RGB, CRTs, Upscalers, and more

Yeah if you could bust out the soldering iron and recap it, good chance that would fix your issue. The tube is fine.

It might even be as simple as looking for potentiometers on the board and adjusting them.

Thanks, you convinced me to hang onto it. I’ll make it a project one of these days if I don’t run across a good replacement.

For now I’ve got the 800XL setup on a little cart beside the Trinitron.

Hey everyone, I will soon be the owner of a television from Italy (I live in Canada). I understand the voltage differences would require a step up voltage transformer as I’ll be going from 120v to 220/30

Anyone have any recommendations for trusted brands or are they all relatively similar?

Also this television only uses about 50watts, so are there any smaller size transformers anyone’s aware of as I don’t require 500/1000 watts or power or anything.

This one on amazon.ca seems to have really good reviews. There’s a 100w model for only $31.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll check it out!

Hey everyone, a couple video signal conversion questions!

  1. What is the best way to watch downloaded movies/video on an s-video or component 240p CRT? I have a CRT_emudriver setup but it outputs RGB. I have old Pi’s but they are composite. I had been thinking of converting RGB to component or Y/C with an adapter. I also considered getting a Pi Hat or using a modded Xbox but if there is a simpler way I would greatly prefer it. Any older stream boxes or anything that would work, possibly with Plex?

  2. Similarly, has anyone found a solid HDMI or Displayport>VGA adapter which doesn’t crush blacks/displays full range RGB? I have a handful of adapters that all either crush blacks, don’t work with some of my VGA CRTs, or both. I love how you can compensate for the limited range chips on MiSTer but I can’t find a good way to do this in Windows (most of the adapters seem to output an off-spec RGB range of 16-255). I am mostly interested in this for my main rig which only has digital outputs on the GPU.

Thanks to anyone who has any info!

I’m sure there are other brands out there, but I have been using a Shinybow sb-2840 for years to convert SCART to Component, and it’s absolutely flawless.

Thanks, that’s about all I have seen as well. That, the RGB2COMP from RetroTink, and the Axunworks RGB2Y/C for s-video. The RetroTink and Shinybow are about the same price, not sure how they compare.

EDIT: They seem similar but the Shinybow uses a 12V PSU whereas the RetroTink uses 5V. I will probably go with the RetroTink if I can’t find a good BNC option.

I was hoping to avoid SCART but it look like it may be needed in this case.

They would both work fine. The Retrotink RBG2COMP supports higher resolutions, but I personally prefer the industrial design of the Shinybow. I screw it to the back of my TV stand, and run one output from my switch through it, and I can just forget it’s there.

Either would be a good choice

In this post here I am using this converter to display my firestick to my TV it was hard to find a converter that I could confirm would output 480i it actually has a toggle button for different output resolutions. Problem is Firestick only outputs in a 16:9 aspect ratio so my way to get around this was to run my Plex server (using the app ‘PlexKodiConnect’ not the addon version because it bypasses Kodi’s player and any other apps I could through Kodi because it has a built in aspect ratio correction that is pretty adjustable. It works pretty well once all set up.

Can you explain more about this?

I would follow a guide online on how to install a Kodi to a firestick theres one here: How to Install Kodi 19.1 on Firestick [New & Best Method for August 2021] I use firestick put honestly anything you can install Kodi on and plug in to this HDMI converter should work, then it depends what you want to install on to Kodi. If you use Plex use the app called PlexKodiConnect and installation instructions should be on the github for that, there are apps you can download directly from Kodi for things like Youtube and Twitch for example so some streaming services may have a Kodi app but some may not like Netflix so unfortunately this isn’t an all encompassing solution here but I primarily stream my own content through Plex anyways. Once you have Kodi set up with all your apps you just want to hook up to your TV via that HDMI to component converter I linked previously and set it to 480i then configure your pixel ratio correction in Kodi Settings/System/Display - Official Kodi Wiki the final segment of that guide goes into detail on the expert video settings in Kodi for aspect ratio correction. Once you dial that in 4:3 content should auto stretch to fit while 16:9 will letterbox on your TV

Wow, that converter is pretty much what I need. I would likely use a Roku with it since it can install Plex natively, or possibly a Pi which would probably make formatting a 4:3 image easier. I have never used the Pi like this so here is a new rabbit hole to get into! Thanks!

I might buy one of those converters too… I use an old Roku that outputs composite to my CRT now but I’m sure component would be nice.

My favorite streaming unit in a normal price range is the newest Chromecast with Google TV or whatever - it’s Android TV without too much bloat. Runs Kodi and Plex all day, and has a toggle for “apps only mode” that turns off a bunch of constantly connected recommendations and other junk. Pretty nice for $50!

I’ve been making some custom labels for my Extron Crosspoint. Really happy with how these are coming out. I’ve been using Octago 100% clear transparency film for this.

Thanks! I’ll post again when I have the whole thing updated.

That’s awesome! I did the same thing, but my Extron doesn’t have fancy light up buttons, so it’s not as cool.

I went with basic pixel art of the console, in the tiny little boxes.

That looks really cool too!

I need to do this. Even though I only use two buttons on my Extron!
