900 TVL? Wow.

What is the highest CRT TVL?

1000 as far as I know.

Ok this downscaling shit is cool. Some games work much better than others, guess it depends on the internal resolution. For instance shovel knight is blurry while bloodstained is razor sharp.

Beautiful shots!

Found a bit of down time and took another run at Sonic 2. Picked up all of the Chaos Emeralds in Chemical Plant so that I could enjoy the rest of the game as more of a sightseeing trip. All shots are on a VA1 Mega Drive via RGB on a PVM20L2.

Fantastic stuff. I wish I could play the Zero collection like that. Doesn’t look right playing it on my LCD. If only devs made better scanline filters…

As someone who played the shit out of GS1&2 I can attest to this. I never thought about it as a kid but as an adult now it’s crazy to think how much devs had to carefully plan around these types of limitations. Now some devs throw the kitchen sink in terms of info on screen sometimes because they have so much more space

Mmm. Fire Emblem on the GBA is another one I’ve been thinking about in adulthood, apparently rethinking the interface due to having half the screen space compared to Super Famicom took up a large portion of development time, but they nailed it.

I loved the use of animation to communicate where you were in the interface, and splitting the typically sense status screens into three distinct pages helps your mind separate the information and you know exactly where to look. Beautiful pixel art as well for the icons and fonts.

Kind of crazy to think those GBA games were a natural continuation from the console thtles - the fifth Fire Emblem was released on cartridge in the early 2000s!

I’ve found myself missing the 3DS and DS when playing modern RPGs, which, like you say, throw everything on to a single screen, making it a lot to take in with no real context behind each panel. The dual screen handhelds let developers neatly communicate information in games with less work required than on the GBA.

Some more Huntdown

Finally OSSC arrived from AliExpress. Already tested with SFC, PC Engine, Megadrive and Neo Geo AES. Here’s some KOF’96 on AES with Hybrid Scanlines (Scart RGB)
