In the city where I live the magnatude was level 4 but that’s nothing for the homes in Japan. Most homes built in the last 20 years can easily survive a level 7 which is why most of the destruction in Kumamoto is mostly down to gas ignighting. Well, that and the explosion at the AEON mall. Man, that was like something from a movie. My own house is built on sliding plates, so when an earthquake hits, the house movement is minimal.
I saw the BBC coverage and like a lot of western news, it’s dramatised for views. The AEON Mall that blew up has so far claimed 3 lives. All young women in their 20s. There may still be people trapped.
I was in work when the earthquake struck, a level 5 in the city where I work. My office is on the 7th floor so we got quite a bit of movement but nothing fell down.
