What are some retro gaming misconceptions that people incorrectly believe?

Great to read this!

Yes it makes so much sense they do not have a similar feel at all.

It gathered the reputation due to having the Richard cameo (though of course LA has heaps of contemporary Nintendo cameos) and being Japan only allowed the rumour to spread. I mean I imported a copy like ~20 years ago because I am a huge fan of LA and wanted to play the ‘related game’. I’ve still not played it through though, even with the translation.

I played through the fan translation on a flashcart about 2 years ago and thought it was extremely charming.

It was a totally “on rails” experience compared to even the most linear Zelda games, but I really enjoyed the ride.

It can be beat in under 10 hours if I remember correctly.

Mario Kart 64 seems to be widely cited as the first game to include a distinctly named mirror mode that mirrors the game visuals, as evidenced by Google AI summaries parroting it:

But 1996’s Aqua Jet from Namco at the arcades introduced this before it, calling it Mirror World:

I’m sure many games had mirror mode before Mario Kart 64.

Daytona on the Saturn had it. That was released before the N64 hardware was even released.

Yep, and 2D racers definitely had mirror modes as well.

Perhaps an argument could be made that Mario Kart 64 was the first time a formal mirror mode became actual content that sat alongside the main game, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was also done before as well.

Hmm, quite possibly but I find it hard to belive. If I wasn’t so busy I’d look in to this as its interesting. Sadly I don’t have the time.
