What consoles/computers did you buy new, before you started collecting used ones?
For me it was like this:
Commodore VIC-20
Commodore 64
Amiga 1000
Sega Master System
Amiga 1200
PC Intel 486 DX 66
Game Boy
Game Gear
Super Nintendo
PC Intel Pentium 150
PC Intel Pentium II 350
PC Intel Pentium III 650
PC AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1200
Microsoft Xbox
Nintendo GameCube
Sony PSP 1000
PC Athlon 64 X2 2800+
PC AMD Phenom II X4 920
PC Intel i5 3570K
Nintendo 3DS
Nintendo Switch
And that last computer is where I am today… I am in need of a new PC soon, as it’s starting to show its age. I’ve gone through 3 new GPUs, 2 power supplies, and a new case since buying it, so it’s holding its own, but I don’t want to fork out the money for another GPU without upgrading the rest of it.
All of the computers and systems up to the Pentium 150 would have been family or older-brother purchased. I was too young to afford that! The first computer I ever bought with my own money (and built myself) would have been the PII 350 at the age of 17 (1997). I’ve been building my own computers since then.

I picked up SNES, Saturn and Neo Geo MVS as a collector after the fact. PS2 was still in production even though I got it right before or after the Wii U (can’t remember which game first but I think Wii U).
My first few systems were all used but were current gen at the time: VIC-20, Intellivision, Commodore 64. A bunch of current systems were bought used since then.
Makes me wish I had been collecting all this time. Granted, the further I head down the everdrive route, the less I want to collect media. I still think real hardware, a real controller, and a CRT are must haves.

It’s tricky to list out my PC history - it started with a Gateway 2000 386 and has been a string of updates/upgrades ever since, often with many multiple desktops, laptops, and servers running simultaneously. (Before my wife and I were married, I had 3 Linux servers running in my kitchen.)

While I didn’t own one at launch, a friend of mine rented an imported Japanese N64 the week it came out. It was really exciting to play Super Mario 64 a few months before its domestic release.
N64 was about the only console I bought on launch day, I was at technical college at the time and we would go into town at lunchtime, everyone was in the shop queuing up for a go of Mario 64, I walked straight up to the counter and bought one while they queued (I hadn’t mentioned to anyone that I had been saving up for one for 3 months)
