Wii U Appreciation and Collecting Thread

Well, here’s a start:

Yah seems way too soon. I dunno I really liked it in Mario Maker and Mario 3D World so I hope they get patched to have… something.

They should patch those games so that they’re on the Switch instead.

  1. I love the Wii U library. There are some great games.
  2. For the best video quality, don’t play Wii and Gamecube games on Wii U.

What?

Yeah, The Wii U filters and scales the video of everything in the “vWii” mode aka the compatibility mode. This includes homebrew like Nintendon’t, which enables native playback of Gamecube games. And it does it regardless of your output resolution and overscan settings. And regardless of whether you use HDMI or component. It’s a design flaw. Which is a darned shame, because AMD GPUs are capable of all kinds of cool things like native 240p analog output, even! It just wasn’t implemented well in this case.

I totally understand people using the Wii U for Wii and Gamecube. It’s convenient! But since we strive for accuracy of information about all things video related here at RGB, I’d be remiss to not mention that there is better video quality available.

What’s the best image quality for playing Wii on a fixed-pixel HDTV? On an real Wii through an OSSC in line2x mode!

But man, the Wii U has a great library. Tropical Freeze and SM3DW are two of my favorite games of the last ten years.

The Miiverse was amazing, so strange that they wont bring it to the Switch. They even adopted it to the 3DS for some reason, but no Switch :frowning:

They don’t want to pay for moderators or server costs anymore.

Yep. Not a Wii U owner but I have a Switch so this is your obligatory port peg post. I’d love to have a shot at DKTF, Mario Maker, 3D World and more

OP updated to include Bayonetta 2 port to Switch.

ah well I had this console too for a short time. This was my collection up til the imminent release of the Switch then it was all traded in… When it came to packing it away for selling off I couldn’t believe how much gimmicky stuff came with it. Not to mention that controller that could never be replaced >.>

New Nintendo Direct means more Wii U ports on Switch.

I’ve added Hyrule Warriors and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze to the list.

I’m looking to buy a WiiU in a couple months and was thinking of grabbing the 8Gb white model as I already have games for the system. Is there anything this model lacks besides storage?

Nope, it’s identical in every other way.

Thanks!

Okay so we are starting to get Wii U to switch ports more regularly but WTH? $60 for DKC TF gets you 1 new character? You can go down to almost any store that still has Wii U stock and pick DKC for $15-20. Hyrule Warriors added all the DLC and it probably runs @ 1080/60 but is that worth $60? Nope.

Anyway, if you are collecting Wii U games BBY has a Deal on Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Paper Mario Color splash. These are weaker games on the Wii U but a discount is a discount. Or you can wait for the Switch port and pay $60.

But… Portable!

this, but unironically

I think the fact the Hyrule Warriors added a ton of content from the Wii U and Switch the $60 is more reasonable than DKC with just adding 1 character. I just don’t like Warriors games and it was painful for me to beat Hyrule Warriors the first time.

I played DKC with the DPad a lot so even if buying the game for portability I am still wary because those buttons don’t do jack for me and the DPad on the pro controllers are terrible (i have the first gen one and you can press 2 directions at the same time). Honestly, Nintendo should fix this for free. I probably should call because I just dropped $75 on the Xenoblade 2 controller because I need a DPAD.

Check out the Nintendo ‘Refurbished’ store section on their site. I picked up the Collector’s Edition of Xenoblade Chronicles X for under $30 CAN IIRC back in the fall.

Yeah, you’re right on, but the reality is these games aren’t for you and I, they’re for people who never bought a Wii U. We got to play them first a long time ago in some cases. I can’t really blame Nintendo for offering them to a new audience.

They are for me too. I just don’t want to pay $110 ($50 on Wii U + $60 Switch). It would be easier to put away the Wii U into its Box for it to sit in my garage never to be played again with the likes of my PSP, Xbox 360 & my pre NES consoles.

I have so many damn accessories for the Wii U. I loved that console.
