We have? Man, I’m forgetting so much these days. Still, amazing that we probably knew of each other as kids.
Just bumped our 3 year old DM about this
There’s a hamsters in the Archimedes TOSEC, but it’s a demo only. Quite a bit of Archimedes software is not available online apparently, due to reluctance of the community to dump/share apparently. At least that’s what I’ve heard from others who are active in the community.
The machines themselves were decently built, but contain a deadly backup varta battery that inevitably leaks and destroys the PCB if left unchecked. Thread carefully when buying a machine as any non-serviced machine that’s now being sold as untested likely had significant damage requiring major rework and repairs, and others being unsalvageable at this point. Mostly depending on the angle at which they were stored.
The software that’s written from the ground up to take full advantage of the hardware is few and far between, but there are notable exceptions. Star fighter 3000 is probably the best example to show what the hardware is capable off.
Bizarrely there’s a Hanafuda game for Archimedes which I played under emulation when I was cataloguing it for my big list of Hanafuda games.
The trickiest thing for me was that the system uses three mouse buttons in different ways than we do today. I had to use an app called Middle luck to give my Mac mouse the capability.
Background:
https://deskthority.net/wiki/Mouse_button
Acorn RISC OS
The Acorn Archimedes mouse had three buttons. These buttons were named Select, Menu, and Adjust, and functioned as follows:
Select
The Select button behaves the same as button 1 on any other system.Menu
The centre button display a menu at the mouse cursor position. RISC OS has no menu bars, and the application menu structure appears as a context menu would on other system. If the menu was opened against an object on the screen (text selection, file icon etc) then one of the sub-menus will be for the item in question.Adjust
The right button, Adjust, is the complement of the Select button. Using Adjust performs an action that is complementary to what the Select button would have provided. For example, Select-drag brings a window to the top when moving it, while Adjust-drag does not. Select-click on a Filer window’s close box closes the window, while Adjust-click first opens the parent directory’s window. Select-click sets the Filer (file manager) selection, while Adjust-click toggles the item within the selection. The Adjust button replaces the need to use modifier keys during mouse operation.
Also, I believe you can run RISC OS on a Raspberry Pi these days.
Do you know where to that Hanafuda and also where the full version adf or rom of Hamsters is? (not the demo)
I found one that did not work in my emulator. MY demo version of Hamsters works. I have mess-archimedes on the retropie.
-Doug (be well all)
Oh. My hamsters adf that works is 800kb. The one that does not is 1600kb. Unless there is some setting i should change that would make the 1600 work.
Their collection value is more important than preservation. Buncha assholes.

Did you try this Hamsters? linked from here

another couple of Hamsters here Archimedes Archive
Thanks so much!!
Yeah. It’s always been that with emulation. started in the early days, but once a brave soul starts sharing the floodgates open after the initial attempt to stop him.
Did you have any luck? is one of these the full version?
Don’t know yet. So far, no.
voila! Full version that works!!!
https://arcarc.nl/games.html has working acorn archimedes disks!!!
Great news! I’ve archived that page to Wayback Machine so we’ll forever have a copy of those files.
Great!
