Yeah, you’re okay if you use a unique password but it just seems a bit amateur for me. I’m not super comfortable sharing my data somewhere that isn’t properly secure.
How hard is it put some kind of message on the home page? I’ve sent a few notes via the feedback form and given my email address for some kind of update. Nothing from them. It’s just idiotic.
Honestly, if it’s financial, get it working right and I’d give them $5-$10 for a year of usage. It’s that good.
GVN seems back up?
Excellent! Thx
@fester, are you still using Gameye?
I noticed recently that GameValueNow is broken with regard to price tracking. They haven’t cataloged a price for anything since September of '21. That means all my values are in some cases much lower than actual values. I sort of discovered this the hard way when I went into Game and DVD Exchange in Media, PA and their prices were OUTRAGEOUSLY HIGH, or seemed to be, until I started looking stuff up on Price Charting. *sigh*
That made me balk at purchases that day, but definitely made me curious about my collection value, which of course I couldn’t properly find because of GVN’s busted ass software.
Yep, still using Gameye and the developer has continued to improve it. Prices seem to be updated and I just did a couple spot checks with Pricecharting to confirm. I think it’s a great app and honestly surprised the author doesn’t charge for it - I’d easily pay $5-10 for what it offers.
Regarding GVN, I think I saw it mentioned in this video that it was bought out by Wata Games (or someone connected to them) so who knows what’s going on.
Damn, really? I noticed my collection wasn’t gaining in value lately and just figured things had peaked. Sigh. Guess I need to move to another platform. GVN has shit the bed a few times now.
I’ve also been using Gameye and have been really happy with it. It’s easy to use and add new games and really like the different ways you can sort and view your collection.
It’s not perfect, however. I’ve had to add some games myself that were not listed yet, probably because they were too new and/or obscure. I also have quite a few games that say the price is unknown, usually for Japanese games like my PS1 Vib-ribbon, and most of my X360 Cave shmups, but also for some NA games like Plague Tale for the Series X or Taiko Drum Master for PS2. I can’t quite figure it out. But at least I have them listed, even if there’s no price.
Does Gameye list Neo Geo? US and Japan? That’s been an issue for me with GameValueNow.
And yeah @Radarscope1 it’s out of date. Whoever owns it doesn’t seem to use the site or they’d notice this stuff.
Sure does. I see Neo Geo CD, Neo Pocket, AES and Arcade listed. But sometimes prices may be missing and the Japanese versions may not always be listed. It seems like it may be spotty after a quick look.
Here’s an example:
But if it’s missing any games, you can always go to https://thegamesdb.net/ and enter the game yourself, and it will show up. I’ve had to do that with a few games of my own.
Seems similar to GameValueNow, then. I’ve had to do adds there too.
I just wish they had a desktop version too. That would probably make it easy to export my stuff from one place and move it to the other. The fact it’s all an app makes it a frustrating shift when you have a massive collection like I do.
The lack of a desktop version is probably my biggest gripe, and I hope it’s something they add in the future.
It was actually pretty easy to scan all the barcodes into the app in batches, and went fairly quickly. I just took stacks from my shelves and scanned the barcodes that way. You may have a bigger collection than I do, though, and I don’t have many carts, which would have to be manually entered unless you have the boxes. I’ve got about 1,260 games according to the app, so YMMV.
A couple years ago the developer was doing imports for people manually and he helped me get my stuff moved over. Maybe worth a shot sending him an email?
There are so many ways to track a collection but in all honesty many suck due to missing games, especially Japanese titles.
I just build my own excel sheet and keep it on Microsoft One Drive. Then when I’m out I can always pull up my latest list if I’m unsure if I already have a game or not.
The “Do I have it or don’t I” is less of an issue for me today than “Is this stuff worth so much I need better insurance” issue.
@heavyliquid I hope to be moving sometime in 2022 so I may use that as the opportunity to scan everything. My games are mostly complete save for Super Nintendo/Super Famicom and N64. There aren’t enough of those to cause me huge issues though.
Definitely need to get on top of this stuff this year. I turned 50 last week. It needs to be addressed.
Yeah,I keep all mine on a google sheets.
The only bummer is that I don’t have box art and so sometimes am unaware of which version I have while out.
I starteded using Gameye, but agree that a desktop site would be nice. Some of the artwork is wrong (Example, JPN Mr. Bones has US box art), but the barcode scanner was really handy. Shame Saturn titles have their barcodes on the obi, so I had to dig them out a bit.
I also wasted some time putting my saturn collection into VG collect and it seems decent enough I guess, I’m still not sure how amazin it is yet.
I’ve gotta have a desktop version of any tool. I can’t go back to a spreadsheet after using something that tracks price in real time, either. That was so handy and just good to know. I’ll probably just start using PriceCharting’s tool. It’s clearly always being updated and maintained. I’m just not looking forward to moving it all over. Sigh.
@Radarscope1 I just took a quick look at Price Charting’s Collection tool and attempted an import of all my stuff from an export taken from GameValueNow. For the most part, everything was imported, however the PC tool wants you to tell it “CIB” for Complete In Box and the export from GVN does this as “TRUE” or “FALSE” for each thing (cart, manual, box…) so my suggestion after trying this is to add CIB to everything you import provided most of your stuff is complete (mine is…) so that it’s much easier to go back and change from CIB to cart only or whatever the equivalent is at PC after the fact. Otherwise, you have to change every listing to CIB MANUALLY at Price Charting to get an accurate price listing.
It does look like it’s not terribly awful to do this switch or even to use it as a second option. It’s annoying, because Price Charting is ugly and not very friendly where GVN is easy to look at and much friendlier to users both on desktop and mobile.
EDIT…
OK, some more weirdness and pitfalls. The import will definitely miss some stuff. I deleted everything and re-imported. Stuff I think it took in the first time didn’t go in the second time. Who knows what’s up with that? I did add the CIB where applicable on the original spreadsheet export from GVN in a new column so I could then paste it as part of the title/system/condition expected by the importer. You can probably avoid some issues if you do this at least two times to see what fails to go through on try one.
The weirdness is that once you have the collection in there, it doesn’t track it properly. I’m seeing about half my games in the value declaration. 472 of the 1020 or so that I imported. I’m not sure why this is happening as I can actually locate all my games in the ALL list… BUT you cannot filter on NES or Neo Geo AES among others so that makes part of your collection invisible unless you use ALL to see everything. Who the hell knows what’s going on there?
What I did to verify it all imported was to do an export (you are only allowed one per week) to do a side by side comparison in Excel. Turns out everything was in there save a few oddball items I need to still manually add. It’s just not tracking it all, which sucks, because that’s the whole point! *sigh*
Also, the export is in pennies, so you have to /100 and create a new column to get your dollar value and then manually add it up. I did this and I’ve gained $6,000 in value since September based on the old GVN numbers… which jives with what I’m seeing in stores.
So Price Charting is kinda ok, but kinda not. Looks like I’ll have to try something else too. Given all the bugs and problems in these systems, I feel like those of us in this thread are the only ones using this stuff… lol
Ugh. Sounds rough. Thanks for the report.
