GBS-C 82XX - Upscale, deinterlace and now downscale

Does your SCART to RGBS adapter have any sync cleaning on it? What’s on the other end, BNC connectors? There are a few adapters on eBay (not sure if they ship to Australia) that will take SCART and output RGBS over VGA/DE-15 or the header pins into the GBS.

If you’re going the build your own route you need to wire up a SCART socket to the pins behind the VGA socket and also have a 100ohm resistor between ground and sync, this is for sync levels generally output from consoles (75ohm) vs TTL level sync from say a PC outputting VGA.

What’s your 480p SCART source? PS2 480p Sync on Green? if so you will need a sync cleaner (*wired for SoG I think) as I believe it doesn’t directly work with SoG, generally a sync cleaner is recommended as the GBS prefers C-Sync vs Luma/Composite video sync (might get dropouts with the latter two). If your 480p SCART source is say a Dreamcast then it depends if it’s outputting TTL sync or 75ohm, if it’s TTL then you need to disable the 100ohm resistor, easy enough to do if you wire up a switch.

If you plan to downscale RGB 480p it’s worth noting that it can’t downscale RGBHV and requires RGBS. I recommend Tim Worthingtons VGA TO SCART (75ohm, safe for OSSC, etc) adapter.

Unrelated but there’s now an all-in-one solution being sold on Aliexpress, not sure how good they are but they have the SCART socket already wired up although it looks like the clock gen isn’t installed weirdly but comes as an optional kit.

Very interesting!

Thanks so much for this.

After a good read I decided to wind back my use case for the scaler. Originally I only wanted to put it together for PS2 - I deliberately kept the cost down because I’m also looking into getting a MisTer. So really the GBSC will really only be used for its fast motion adaptive deinterlacing and my understanding is that I should have no issues with component video out from my PS2.

I wouldn’t mind DC as well but maybe I’ll just wait for those component cables to finally be sold.

Using component is so much easier!

A new redesigned GBS all-in-one is out on aliexpress, has built-in HDMI out and SCART in. Looks like it has all the mods needed too. Tempted to pick this up for the dual output.

Switch for RGsB too, perfect for PS2 480p over SCART

Looks like an easy sell. Has it been confirmed to not have any new quirks/surprises?

Not yet. It would be nice if rama got the chance to look at it and give it a quick inspection

Naturally just as all of my parts arrive. Oh well I bought it as a fun project.

Is the web UI very unstable for anyone else? I have my board mounted this way (ignore the incorrect wiring for the clock generator that I just spotted)

At the moment it’s very hit or miss whether I can get in, and if I do it is very flaky whether the settings take or not. I’ve given it a static IP on my router and I’ve read that changing my wifi channel to 11 or 12 can help alleviate some of the interference.

Mine is pretty flaky but I’m quite far from the router. I sometimes have problems with the WebUI accepting changes too and usually have to restart it

yeah mine is unstable as well. I found that using my phone and turning off mobile data is the most consistent way

Thanks! I’ll tinker with it some more when I get the chance (after I fix my bodged clock generator install) glad to know it’s not just my setup that has the issue.

Out of curiosity I hooked it up to my PC monitor with an VGA to HDMI converter and there was a fair bit of noise in the image. I think my revision 8200 v 4.0 has a capacitor they suggest removing to clean up the signal a bit - so I’ll give that a shot. That said it could be the random converter I picked up as well because I couldn’t spot the noise on my CRT even at 1280x1024.

I think I’ve seen some noise on the output too. Btw have you noticed the GBS-C outputting a cooler colour temp?

My WiFi also flaky. I read that it’s interference from the other stuff. Took a few minutes after each power on to stabilise.

I only used it a couple of times near the beginning. I’ve not touched it since!

I only see noise/snow on specific settings, which I worked around. Don’t ask me for details.

it could just be my TV but I noticed a warmer color temp yesterday

Whoa, does yours still have the RGB pots on?

I found a vid of the sort of difference I’m seeing:

I’ve only tested it briefly with PS2 via component and it had a definite green cast (grey screens became green) which I was able to fix by going into the dev settings and changing the oversampling settings.

not sure, I’ve never really looked under the hood, I bought it preassembled. my monitor’s calibrated to 6500k color temperature which is pretty cool. not sure there are any other color anomalies with the GBS-C though as I’ve never been very good at identifying colors

The wifi instability is pretty well known. Drove me nuts at first. The suggestion has been to move your esp away from all other components if possible. Voultar made a video where he installs it basically at the edge of the board standing on its side. After watching, I decided to redo mine as he suggested and it definitely helped. You might try that.

Also, you may have already noticed but the thing will not respond at all if it is not getting a video signal. That throws me for a loop sometimes still, as my setup is convoluted and often I’ll think I’m sending a signal when I’m not (I use multiple video switches, so it’s easy to get confused).
The thing works pretty well when it works, especially for the price. You have to be able to put up with its quirks though.

Too bad that AliExpress cable page does not exist anymore.
I tried to downscale Switch with ODV GBS-C and result was not so great. Picture was shifted to the right and if i try to shift picture to the left through the browser it goes ape***** and out of sync.
