It makes me grimace and groan when people say “waggle”, because it’s gaslighting the fact that all first party Nintendo games (and perhaps the majority of other Wii games) only require very subtle motion control.
Just look at Wii speed runners and the types of movements they have honed in on. There’s no waggle or flailing around, just precision.
If you don’t like motion control that’s another thing. But even that I’d find it difficult to understand… it’d be like refusing to use analog sticks because you consider them less precise than a d-pad when in fact the opposite is true.
Curious to see if and how they would change the controls for handheld mode. Probably only going to be playable with a detached Joy-Con. Hope there’s a limited edition with golden Joy-Cons coming.
Well said. Waggle is a bit of a derogatory term to discuss the Wii. But you don’t see it in the VR context for some reason.
I think the term is a bit of an anachronism when you consider just how many products use motion controls these days and just how formative the Wii was towards getting them standardized. Heck, your likely phone has them to perform various actions (ie to rotate the display).
Has one of my favorite villains in the entire series. I always loved skyward sword. It’s also something that I think really looks nice on a CRT. I feel like part of the art style won’t translate well to modern panels. It has a sort of pastel colored look to it that they need to reimagine a tad in a modern port imo.
I cannot answer that question, but what I can say is that I am playing it on a PVM 20L5 which can sync with 480p natively. So, I set the Wii to 16:9 mode in the options, then force letterboxing on the CRT using the 16:9 option there to see the game in the Wii’s full native widescreen (with letterboxed borders imposed by the CRT).
It looks stunning there. I imagine it was designed on such a CRT, but tested on LEDs and Plasma displays that upscaled to 720p and 1080p respectively.
Even on my 1080p Panasonic Plasma back in the day, I thought the game looked fantastic using all stock hardware (with no external scaler).
There are a bunch of late gen Widescreen only Wii games that are like this - Xenoblade, both Kirby games, SS, etc. But I can’t imagine they changed their development environment significantly to account for it.
I feel like it was designed with widescreen CRTs in mind primarily. My setup doesn’t consist of one but I make due with my 4:3 CRT. I’ve tested the game on it and on my LCDs+DLP before and it still looks a lot better on the CRT. It just sucks that the screen is so tiny because the grand scale does feel nicer on a larger screen. It does make me wish I owned a big widescreen CRT for all those 6th/7th Gen games that look good on them
I’d expect them to design using 480p 16:9 which I guess most CRTs did at that point? It’s hard to remember!
What I mean is that Nintendo are stalwarts and wouldn’t have designed for displays that only a fraction of the public had. They took an age to go wide-screen only.
Let’s just say that I prefer the quicker response gained from button pressing over motion controls and that motion controls weren’t for me.
I played DKCR and disliked that I had to adapt the timing of the roll which involved a waggle of the remote. I also disliked the inaccuracy of the shield bash from Twilight princess and that it made the game less enjoyable as a fights also went on too long.
I also disliked the combat in Skyward sword and found the start of the game slow and tedious.
I also disliked the timing and difficulty I had with combat in Okami on the wii as well.
TLDR: the unenjoyable experiences with motion controls on the wii far outweigh my enjoyable ones. That also goes for motion controls on DS/PS. I just don’t like them.
I’m also lazy and would rather press a button.
My other issue is that SS took too long to get started. Yeah I’m all for world building and stuff like that, but I despise games that take an hour or two to get going. You want me to play you game? You have to show me you have something worth putting the effort in first, a little taster of whats to come later. Not sheep wrestling.
Although I am like that with anime as well. Any recommendation that “it gets good after 3 episodes” is not a recommendation. It should be good from the start, otherwise its wasting my time.
By 2011 flat lcd tvs were also the default, I’d expect an office building in japan would have ditched crts altogether years before except for maybe testing 480i SD modes.
I’ll save you some trouble because a native pixel widescreen 480p panel doesnt really exist, as widescreen 480p signals have fat pixels with a res of 720x480. And widescreen crt tvs almost all are 1080i only with upscaling from lower res.
720p widescreen CRTs existed though and they could still do a great job displaying the game despite having to output a non native resolution. Playing the game on a nice Sony widescreen TV looks wonderful even if the jaggies are even more apparent
