Is Layer Section/Galactic Attack considered the greatest Shmup of all time? Genuinely asking here. What other Shmups do I need to play?

This. I’m not huge into the genre, but I love this game. It was easy enough to pick up, but has the perfect difficulty curve. It’s a pretty chill game to play, if that makes sense?

Okay, now I’m definitely going to grab a new shmup. I beat Layer Section this morning! No cheats!

I feel like such a badass.

Congrats! Now buy Sturmwind for the Dreamcast.

I may eventually pick that up. But right now, I’m looking for another vertical shmup with Tate mode for my CRT.

Something more on the old-school side of things which is why i’m considering Project Raiden.

I’ve been seeing RayForce show up more and more on people’s list of favorite shmups the last few years. As someone who’s always loved that game to death, it’s nice to see it finally get its due. I think a lot of people simply wrote it off because it wasn’t as rare/expensive as others, but now that it’s climbing in price, people are paying more attention.

If Project Raiden speaks to you go for it. It’s a great game. I’m looking in to picking up Raiden V for the PS4 now that it’s so cheap.

Here’s a full list of console shmups that support Tate mode. Courtesy of Doomsdave over at

Damn I love this setup :heart_eyes:

I’ve been looking for a list like this for so long I forgot I was looking for it

This is AWESOME! Thanks!

Out of those listed for Steam which would you recommend for a newbie?

Downwell is so damn dope. In the next few months, I’ll be able to TATE my 60 inch screen for it. Can’t wait to play it that way.

I had no idea Downwell had TATE mode! Thank you!

I missed this thread while busy with things, but I’ll just add that DoDonPachi and ESP Ra.De. are the great of all time. OF ALL TIME.

Thanks for that, all the Saturn ones are becoming expensive fast!

Davidwangchoi came over last night with a bunch of Shmups. The two that really stood out to me, and that I plan to acquire, are DonPachi on Saturn and Project Raiden on PS1.

Apparently all that Layer Section gaming got me prepared for bullet hell as I was dodging and weaving in DonPachi better than I even thought I was capable of. The only bummer on that game is the load times. Otherwise it looks freaking amazing.

Those are two damn good choices. If you get the US version of Project Raiden there is a gameshark/genie code to enable tate mode. Which is in the Japanese version but pulled from the US version for dumb stupid reasons.

I copied Dave’s save which had the cheat already implemented. My copy will be here this week :slightly_smiling_face:
