You’re specifically looking in the 13" range?
13 to 20 inches is the right size for me.
You might want to look into a different PVM if you want things like S-Video or Component.
Maybe look for a PVM-1341?
Would you suggest trying to find one locally or getting it on ebay?
Why not both? Never bought a CRT on eBay before, but couldn’t hurt in today’s environment. Just make sure they know how to ship properly.
I also found an 8 inch RGB PVM, but that may be too small. What do you think?
I have bought several new old stock security monitors off ebay and have recently seen some for a bit over $100 USD shipping included. Usually from non desirable brands with generic samsung tubes in them but they look really good, and earlier this year I got a Panasonic video monitor the same way.
It’s a PITA to filter results but if you search for “security monitor”, " color monitor", or “video monitor” they do pop up occasionally.
New boxed monitors hold up better in shipping due to the original packaging being designed for that. Just make sure UPS isn’t delivering.
No UPS or USPS? How about FedEx?
I know that freight is best.
I found a Trinitron KV-20FS12 for free. I believe it has s-video input, and the TV even comes in the original box. It’s 20 minutes form my house.
Those are nice little TVs, but it’s RF and Composite only. They can be modded for RGB though if you can find someone local that can do it.
Good point, the manual for mine didn’t have a comb filter listed anywhere but @poptart identified it from another source online.
Odd. Maybe ask the seller for some pictures of the back panel to make sure?
I picked up the TV and it only has RF and Composite like raskulous mentioned. It was free so I didn’t test it and waste the owner’s time. It has this weird issue where the middle of the screen bends upward, as seen here (sorry for the poor picture quality):
Is there a way to fix this? (Even though the screen looks curved in the picture, it’s actually flat)
I was also considering RGB modding it, as raskulous said
This is an ultra common issue with almost every Sony flat screen CRT ever. There is no easy fix unfortunately. Some are worse than others and for a 20" yours looks particularly bad
Is there a harder fix or would you recommend just living with it? Do you know why this happens?
I don’t know why it happens, honestly.
It could be an issue with aged capacitors, it maybe a sagging yoke on the tube.
Either way it would require servicing from someone that’s familiar with servicing CRTs.
Eh… not easily. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a post on this site where someone did that much work on a CRT to fix that sort of geometry issue. And I certainly wouldn’t be able to elaborate much since I’m not 100% sure how it all works.
You may want to check out some CRT forums or look for videos where people fixed geometry issues to see what’s involved. (It’s a lot).
If you’re not a really experienced modder or engineer, I’d avoid it. The inside of a CRT is a dangerous place that could electrocute you to death if you don’t know what you’re doing and touch the wrong thing. Be super careful if you go that route and study up on everything.
For an RF and Composite set, I’m not sure it’s worth the hassle even if you do have the skill. Then again… you could mod it for RGB (something I’ve seen before but it’s super rare). But again, you really have to know what you’re doing.
It seems like all you have to do is open the TV, very carefully discharge it, and replace all of the capacitors.
I’ve discharged large CRTs probably a hundred times at this point.
Its a high risk activity that is simple in nature, as long as you do it properly. You can do it, but I don’t think anyone on this site will recommend it - especially for a small issue like the one you have.
Do you have a confirmed cap list? I’m not an expert on that stuff, but I do think there are certain types of capacitors you have to use in certain places. You may not be able to just read the values and match them.
It’s a worthwhile accomplishment to fix something like a CRT, but I would give it a week or so of playing on it currently to see if the geometry actually bothers you or not.
