I don’t think they have a name. 
This was what an faq called them, eg.
This was also released on the PS1, and also on the Saturn in Japan as Thunder Storm.

Finally found one lol
It’s a free shmup called Spolous that’s a Gradius clone, so of course they had to include a Moai stage.

While playing RE Code: Veronica yesterday, I spotted these guys. Those are Moai, aren’t they? Sorry for the crappy photo, I’m playing on Dreamcast so I can’t make screenshots.
