NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread - Playing With Power, Then and Now

So the Nintendo-published NES game To The Earth is 30 years old this month. I’m curious about its developer(s). Lots of sites list Cirque Verte but I can’t any more info on them. Anyone know anything?

Hmm. French for Green Circus

Says US copyright lists the developer.

Just posting this for those that may not have seen it. Famicom N8 Pro is just around the corner.

I’m going to pre-order this as soon as possible - I sold my original N8 with my Hi-Def-Nes because I knew this was coming out and having the ability to play Metal Slader Glory and some of the larger romhacks is a must for me.

Nice, I would love to get that too and it has some cool new/extra features that would make it better than the original.

Larger cart size is a no for me. They look dumb. The regular N8 in a smaller (regular Fami size) shell I got from AliExpress looks perfect and has honestly done anything I’d ever want for many years.

Maybe I’ll get an NES one for the front loader though, depending on price.

I hadn’t watched that before but just did. I still love the music in the game even though it’s not one my favourite 8-bit light gun titles.

I’d be interested to see if there’s anything interesting in memory whilst the game is running. I’ll try to remember to have a look tomorrow.

What does the pro do that the non pro can’t do?

Adventures in NES fixing.

Picked up a PAL NES for $20, untested. Could get it to work with the cart at an odd angle etc.

So cracked it open, disabled the lockout chip and removed the connecter.

Lifted the pins somewhat then boiled it for 30 minutes. Dried it, put it back in - voila, perfect connector. Every game now boots first time every time.

Next, I have no PAL controllers, so had to mod the controller connectors to get NTSC pads working, all done in a few mins.

Finally I go to clean it up a bit. Alcohol and a cloth is cleaning it up nicely… until it ERASED the red from the the ‘Nintendo Entertainment System’ logo doh!

The logo is still visible in a nice grey due to having blocked the yellowing.

I have a spare, but it’s not PAL, and now I’ll have to peroxide the yellowed console to match the new lid lol

Could you buy a sticker? I haven’t looked around, but I would think those exist. How well they match the OEM layout may be another question though.

Another option is going full custom at this point and see how a full paint job does. Or clean it down fully so no label is visible for a custom clean look.

Still remember the first time I took off printed text from a thing I was trying to clean. God damn I was mads.

I’ll just use the replacement door and sell this one. Of course it just rained for the first time in weeks so I cannot peroxide it today now :joy:

It’s already completely gone. It’s only still visible because the plastic has yellowed, but stayed grey where there was writing.

So it was only a bit yellowed, managed to clean it up today and looks fine with the replacement door. And I guess while it is still a PAL machine with the lockouts (cart and controllers) removed it plays everything worldwide now.

It’s here

WTF at the preview picture though…

Congrats!

You’re in a good place to spot Moai.

Regarding the preview photo, how is that post set up in WordPress?

Ah it’s fine, it’s a picture from the article of course, just annoyingly the only one not about the game! The theme I use doesn’t have the ability to set up featured images and I CBF getting into the CSS myself lol.

Let me know if I can help (I do WordPress professionally)

I opened up my copy of Dragon Warrior 2 and found my original receipt from Toys R Us.

I had exchanged my copy, as the first one I had did not save. 59.99 in 1991!

And on the back, the security stamp I received after picking up my game at the cage on the way out of the store.

Very cool!

I was in awe of the NES Dragon Warrior games as a kid, and then playing them through on GBC made me feel like I didn’t get the full experience as they are way easier. But nowadays, yeah I’d much rather play the GBC versions.
