That’s interesting, I’ve seen one or two comments about NT mini having ‘true’ S-video like stock composite NTSC colour space. I don’t own any NT model but you got me wondering!

Here is a capture of the NTSC analog video output of my Analogue Nt Mini. The first half of the video shows the composite capture, the second half shows the s-video capture. You can see how closely the Nt Mini’s composite hews to a real NES/AV Famicom, and how great it would have been if the PPU had separate chroma and luma pins to turn into S-Video.
Strangely enough, Nerdly’s Blog post on the Analogue NT (non-mini) composite mentions lack of dot crawl/stair stepping and speculates it’s derived differently.
I’ve got the v5 kit now just waiting on Tim to put up the instructions, I’ll probably have to wait for a free weekend to install it.
Original fami is nice, mine is in horrible condition so I’m putting the kit in my AV fami. I want to change out the motherboard with the OpenFC for the better isolation:
Ah I have a minty original Famicom I’ve been meaning to RGB for like 10 years. Maybe it’s been worth the wait! There’s also a blueretro adapter for the expansion port so no wired controller issues ever again.
I was looking at those cheap ‘Lava RGB’ kits on Aliexpress as well.
Jealous of the mint condition fami! There’s no replacement white shells it seems, mine is very yellow and as cool as transparent shells are in this case I’d like to keep the original look.
I tested it on my NT mini noir. If you change the RGB palette, the svideo and composite result changes color. Therefore, it’s not generating native NES colors, it’s using whatever you put in for RGB.
I saw those a few months ago and was happy anyone who wanted to do this mod didn’t need the expensive kit anymore. Buuuuuuut desoldering the DIP40 PPU and getting a socket in its original holes takes enough time/effort that the cost of the kit is kinda irrelevant if you value your own labour.
I’m not sure what’s going on, a lot of varying info on the internet. This is saying you can only change it with ‘Vs. System’ games.
The Nt Mini Noir supports custom palettes for HDMI, RGB and Component video and all three derive their palette colors from a matrix of RGB triplet values. With Composite and S-Video, the Nt Mini Noir generates NTSC video directly like a NES’ PPU does (Composite) or would have (S-Video if Nintendo did not combine chroma and luma in the PPU). The Dejitter box in Video - Extra Features should always be unchecked when using Composite video on the Nt Mini and the NES core.
Custom palettes do not work with the Nt Mini Noir’s NES Core with composite or s-video in gameplay (except that the selected custom palette will display when the menu is on-screen) with one exception, Vs. System. With Vs. System games, the Nt Mini Noir converts the RGB-based color values of the PPU to composite or s-video. (The jailbreak readme is not correct on this point.) So when you view these games on a composite display, they will look a little different compared to a regular NES’ display even once you account for the different palette colors.
He has another video that shows him specifically bypassing the original composite to apply different pallets. Is there a chance that your roms are altered?:
Interestingly enough NES Professor says he can’t change the palettes on composite but also shows it looks different to a real Famicom. Don’t know what his setup is here but I don’t think I’ve heard of stock (NTSC) NES colours being this wildly different to a stock Fami/AV Fami before?
I am also using the “gyromite” adapter to play “boku vampire” and “Airwolf” FC carts on my US NES console in the living room
For the outdoor retro kicks, I play carts on a cheap aliexpress Famicom handheld player. And I use the NES2FC-cart adapter to play my NES collection on it. You could get this adapter for your FC console, it works fine for me.
While my main Famicom/NES set is CIB Famicom carts, plus CIB Konami stuff for NES and a few other favourites CIB, back in the GAF days I decided to start something of a second NES collection of loose carts. The idea was I’d have these around for guests to be able to play on a classic front loader
The only problem… reliability. Sometimes spending minutes to get a game running, a bit too accurate to the old school. I would get one of those blinking light wins or whatever if they could be obtained easily?
So I bit the bullet and got a knockoff everdrive. I’ve had a real Famicom N8 since release (more than 12 years going strong!) but couldn’t justify the price for another real one.
Not as authentic anymore but we can get playing quicker…
I wish there was a foolproof way to have carts work long term. Yes I’ve cleaned and boiled the connector, cleaned all the carts etc. they work for a while but a few weeks/months later issues again.
It’s surprising a BLW replacement hasn’t hit the market since the og seems end of life. (I haven’t checked recently, but I recall not being able to find one for sale a year ago or so. I’m glad I bought one when I did.)
I’ve been thinking through my Famicom/NES setups, and it made me think about how my AV Famicom has been my main console for so long now it’s crazy. Around 25 years.
I looked up who I got my Famicom to NES converter, it was 21 years ago in 2005. I found a web archive of the store I bought it from, I thought it might be half interesting.
Now I’ve got the retrotink I might be able to set mine up permanently - never had the space to have my CRT out all the time. It’s also interesting that the footprint of the AV Famicom is pretty similar to something like a PS2 Slim.
