Yeah, it’s sort of like Magical Drop, but using a 3D space. Pretty cool really.

Exactly. Going fresh in on 3D Sonic and I’m left wondering what all the fuss is about. Even Secret Rings on Wii seems like an interesting game.

I’m also surprised that there’s quite a repulsive reaction to Sonic being in realistic worlds rather than 2D-Sonic derived world in the 3D games - I think it works really well, at least in Adventure 2. I did play a bit of Adventure DX where it’s a bit more jarring at first but stopped because I haven’t read good things about that port.

Going back to Sonic Generations after playing Adventure 2 was also very strange for me - the visuals looked quite sterile and corporate in a New Super Mario Bros sort of way.

A lot of it stems from bad collision detection in SA:DX, which is most people’s intro to Sonic in 3D.

The original Dreamcast release is less buggy but still has some issues.

I haven’t played enough Sonic in 3D to give a fair evaluation, but that particular game (Sonic Adventure) has some momentum killing levels.

The levels focused on speed are the best ones.

I hadn’t considered that every Sonic Adventure port has been based on the wonky GameCube version, not a great first impression indeed.

Sonic Adventure 2 is uneven like the first game but I find it’s part of the charm, you never (quite) know what you’re going to be doing next. Even the Tails levels are surprisingly varied between stages.

They are.

I’ve finished Killer 7 for the first time, what a masterpiece.
I did it on hard difficulty which seems « normal », I didn’t like the fact that they put the character to use on the map on normal. And on the first puzzle with the candles they even add numbers on them, on hard you have to look at a detail to figure it out.
I would rank the game as higher as the first Resident Evil (original or remake), an unique evolution of the adventure genre.

It’s a brilliant game.

I can’t really compare it to Resident Evil because it’s so different. REmake was perfect survival horror, nailed what it was going for with incredible technology for the time.

K7 is art, a complete deconstruction of gaming.

I agree with the differences, one is more entertainment and the other more art, but when you say Remake is a perfect survival, don’t forget that it’s the original RE who really created the genre (give it its final form). Personally my experience with K7 was kind of similar to RE PS1 cause I was experiencing an unique evolution of the adventure genre wish totally satisfied me. And very different, with RE being more followed.

Random but I think the the US launch GameCube box is my favorite console box. First of all it looks pretty good, but it also shows 2 Rare games that wouldn’t be released and it has a Miyamoto quote on it which rules. In general, it does a good job of showing the promise of the GameCube. And with 3 Rare games being on the box, it indicates that Rare was going to pick up where they left off from the N64 in terms of output, which they released 11 games for in 5 years.

Sorry for the picture spam - just want to get my point across :stuck_out_tongue:

One of the thing that I love in Twilight Princess is that the magic is now hidden :

Twilight Princess has surpisingly polished gameplay mecanics and controls on the action side of the Hyrule field when traveled on Epona.

The charged spin attack on horse is an exclusive move from Twilight Princess.
It can’t be charged on Wii due to motion control.
It’s my favorite Zelda move, so classy, so satisfying to use, I do it a lot in this video.

The reactive controls of the horse allow to deliver precisely the hit while riding.
With the need to shift yourself to see the ennemi in front of us, it provides a pleasant way to ride in a curved way, wish reminds me of After Burner.
With the charging speen attack, it encourages to group enemies before releasing the attack.
Quick adjustments to attack or defend, with the rich calibration of the speed, provide a deep control for arcade experience.

Aiming the arc while riding demands some precise inputs : when the arc button is pushed, Epona will continue in the same direction on the same speed. So they have to be adjusted before, wish can be a little touchy. But I appreciate the creative and demanding gameplay that results. Overall the GC analog stick is used at its max.

Epona animations have been criticized but imo they have been designed for gameplay first.
Precise controls was the priority with a result as good as an arcade game.
Control delay to fit more rounded animations, like in more modern games, are not allowed to reach that.
As a result for example, horse controls are less responsive in Breath of the Wild. Twilight Princess has the more punchy controls and feels regarding combat in the series.
It demands concentration to be smooth when needed, adding more depth to the gameplay.
The Hyrule field is firstly designed for great ride gameplay on Epona in Twilight Princess.
No score or Game Over obviously, it just links areas with high quality action, in gorgeous sceneries wish build a very coherent world on a space perspective.

Given that it’s the first element of gameplay revealed in the famous first trailer, I have the intuition that the field action gameplay can be the result of those kinds of long gameplay adjustments that Shigeru Miyamoto seems to like, improving an arcade gameplay again and again for years. With excellent enemy placements and space design for good rhythm.
The amount of strategies we can develop while riding is also a testament of the deep design.

Music on Hyrule field is dynamic, to fit actions or exploration…

Horse’s controls have been altered in the WiiU HD port : less responsive (too demanding for the new large audience), and Epona will stop if we brush against a wall. For me it ruined the sens of racing that I enjoy on GC.
I also largely prefer the original set textures, designed to be displayed on CRT TV. The HD textures lack the marvelous artwork of the original with their depth, vibrant colors, brilliance and uniqueness.
I also prefer the original 4:3 format, more immersive and efficient for the screen reading while playing.

Overall Twilight Princess has becommed over time my favorite Zelda with Ocarina of Time.

And even harder with Blue Falcon.

What a game!

No wonder Nintendo are out of ideas for F-Zero. Sega really schooled them with GX.

Hey all
Picked up a JP Gamecube with GBP off of an auction site at what seemed like a reasonable price, but am coming to realise how far I am from being able to boot Swiss/GBI and play on my PVM.
In terms of booting homebrew, it looks like Datel don’t do a Japanese version of the disc, and i’m not super keen on doing the region mod, so i’ll likely go down the avenue of the Home Bros. exploit as it’s rather affordable compared to a GC Loader or something else.
The more troubling part is getting a good picture on PVM - from what I can tell, SCART is not possible on non-PAL Gamecube’s, and Component isn’t an option for me because I don’t have a digital output port (and the cable price). Does that mean S-Video is as good as it’s getting for me? keen to hear if anyone knows better. Cheers!

Yep, RGB is only on PAL Gamecubes, and yeah Japanese isn’t much good for Action Replay etc.

The PVM possibly supports component which you could get from the digital out? But then you need a reasonably expensive component solution.

I’d say your cheapest/easiest bet overall would be to get a PAL Gamecube for RGB (still shouldn’t be that expensive) and a PAL Action Replay to boot Swiss to a memory card reader.

You can use the Japanese GBP on it, as it’s only locked by the software and you’ll be using GB Interface anyway.

The best option for booting at the moment is the Picoboot, which requires soldering but is reasonably easy. It’s my planned next move.

Thanks for the info! I hadn’t looked closely at picoboot, it’s definitely the way to go so that’s great. I decided to sell on what I got and take your advice and get a PAL model, and maybe later down the line case swap with a Japanese spice console  Cheers!

And now for 15 GameCube gem picks:
