Yeah looked it up, the higher clock speeds mean some incompatibilities with games that rely on the CPU clock cycles to calculate some things. But there are patches for many games.
That’s a good point about some games having animations tied to frame rate. Is there a list somewhere of games which need patches when using Nintendont?
EDIT: So I’m reading this as the patches for those problematic games are built in and you don’t have to do anything, is that right?
Yeah seems so.
Damn this stuff annoys me because I can never decide if i should play original spec for the official experience, or improved…
You can never go wrong with original specs.
Yeah I mean that’s the game as it was released.
I just play it the easiest way and spend my time enjoying playing.
I’m a master of procrastination so I’m conscious I’d not get around to much gaming otherwise.
Finally got PN03 in English (had a Japanese copy for years), will get into it and finally complete the ‘Capcom 5’.
Let’s pretend Dead Phoenix became um, Viewtiful Joe 2.
I need another copy of Viewtiful Joe 2 too.
My Gamecube collecting history is weird. Being from Australia I had PAL games, which was fine as most had good PAL conversions or 60Hz modes. Actually picked up heaps of GC games after the generation was over for peanuts.
But when we entered the fixed pixel TV era, 576i/480i only games became unattractive. So I sold some of them planning to get NTSC copies (and at that time I was spending all my money on guitar gear etc). I got some cheap Japanese copies but needed US ones to play in English.
But now with Swiss I can run original PAL discs in 480p no problem, plus they have the nicest cases generally. So am preferring the PAL copies again, and now they’re generally the most expensive!
Looked at my buy sell history and had a bit of a cringe. I sold Viewtiful Joe 1+2+ Red Hot Rumble for $70 in 2014, replacement cost now for that would be like $200, ouch!
However, what did I pay for them? I don’t have data on VJ1 (from memory about $40 a few months after release), but in 2006 I bought VJ2 for $20 and Red Hot Rumble SEALED for $6.5! So I guess it mostly evens out.
finally getting around to setting up ODE’s for my disc based systems, and of course the GC loader is nowhere to be found
what’s the best route to go in 2023 if that thing doesn’t see a restock? haven’t yet found a modder since the move, not sure if any other solderless options are worth it
I haven’t been paying attention - isn’t there a Wii option? If not, there definitely should be. I could’ve sworn you could just boot stuff off a HDD if it’s hacked.
I think Wii U also allows for this even with GCN games, if you want to go that route. It’s pretty close to the OG experience from what I hear if you use the GCN controller adapter. But I suspect it adds a frame or two of input latency.
I personally haven’t had the heart to actually mod my hardware for an ODE yet. I’ve been relying solely on discs or add on solutions like the Satiator. I love my physical library too much.
Even when I have an everdrive, I prefer og carts and even reproduction carts for the stuff that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.
depends if you really want to use a GCN, but yeah a Wii with Nintendont just works. and I’m pretty sure the same is true for a Wii U, but I can’t remember if the Wii U has the GCN internals like the Wii does
oh i’m 100% with you peltz - pls believe, the hardware that doesn’t allow a disc drive (my dreamcast GDEMU for example) i keep hardware for discs nearby too! it’s not optimal, but after the last big move, i’m at a point where i value having a curated library ready to go for me, especially with hardware that’s notoriously finnicky even with my well taken care of discs (OG xbox is a bane for this).
having my silly gamecube component cables and just adoring the hardware, i know y’all are right about just using the wii or wu but i really want to sort something out with my purple lunchbox
With modded Wii and WiiU you can play 99% of games off SD card.
The only one you can’t currently that bothers me is Excite Truck (because of its SD card music feature)
you can play off usb as well, that’s what I do
also some nice features that Nintendont has like forcing NTSC/60 Hz I’m even physical games you own. this was actually a godsend for me as Mario Party 4 is a game that doesn’t work with Nintendont for some reason, but I just so happen to own a PAL copy of it
also toggling wide-screen right from the home menu is another cool feature
ooo how are you doing that? i have a gamecube card with an SD slot but was told compatibility/speeds weren’t great, interested in hearing about alternatives, not familiar with nintendont
it’s on a Wii, I should have specified. Nintendont is a homebrew app for the Wii which runs GCN games. I think it’s also on the Wii U
I’d completely forgotten Nintendo still manufactures the GameCube controller sans-console logo! Stumbled across this lot of them on clearance back in Aomori, Japan. It would have been rude not to pick one up!
And my gosh, a brand new GameCube stick paired with Super Monkey Ball is rather sublime. I can now only imagine how good a fresh N64 controller would be…
GC loader is back in stock, if anyone else was waiting on one!
Anyone have any impressions they’d like to share of Geist and the 64DD-to-GameCube port of Doshin the Giant? Worth playing? You rarely see discussion on either, much like Odama, which I adored. But I appreciate both are going to be very different to something like Odama!
I have both, what do you want to know?
Geist is a quirky FPS with the possession gimmick. It’s solid. I think it’s aged better than a lot of stuff from that era.
Doshin I haven’t played in almost 20 years but it’s a god game where you play the god directly. Animal Crossing kind of tasks. Obviously an N64 game but a great quirky thing.
