Sega is making an OutRun movie with Universal Pictures, directed by Michael Bay and produced by Sydney Sweeny.
What do you think it’s going to be like? My biggest fear is that they completely ignore the OutRun aesthetic and instead make a movie that’s “synthwave” themed.
Synthwave is pretty big now so I guess it’s just adding a property to some movie which will have a character down on their luck who has one last shot at glory, makes friends, has a second act low point/betrayal then wins in the end… like every single movie.
While I love Outrun 2/2006 I wish they had kept the 80s aesthetic more instead of that y2k/Euro aesthetic guy and girl. I’m sure this will go hard on the 80s stuff. One good thing in the Minecraft Movie was the legit vintage stuff in Khal Drogo’s shop, even a Panasonic AG500!
I’m hoping the existence of this means we’re due a series revival or new ports from Sega’s side, given their crossmedia focus in recent years.
