PS1 Appreciation/Collectors Thread of Ugly-Ass Polygons

Oh! I almost forgot. In the Hunt has a great port on the PS1! Some of the best Side Scrolling 2D shmup action on the system.

Definitely, there a port of Metal Slug X as well, but that is very inferior to the arcade version. So I think it’s better when played via the various re-releases.

32-bit 2D is truly the pinnacle of the 2D graphics era. There have been a handful of games here and there since that time like King of Fighters XII/XIII that really pushed the limits of 2D, but clearly that was the last generation that it was a priority even as rudimentary 3D quickly took over.

It’s truly a shame that we couldn’t bask in 2D for that one last generation before moving on, but developer interest, market forces, media, and ultimately the gamers pushed us away from a glorious hardware era of 2D games that never was.

I collect mostly only through that generation anymore because it is the last one that really resonates as being “classic” for me and yes, even that rudimentary 3D stuff is good enough for me to collect. Games like R-Type Delta and Einhander were pretty mindblowing despite the limitations at the time.

It’s one of the reasons why the Saturn is one of my favourite consoles.

I also love how the PS1’s trademark dithering made some 2D games look. Gave them this leathery sort of storybook appearance.

Like I really wish we had one whole generation where games looked like this. It’s perfection.

I just saw a ps1 for sale ad that listed it as a “vintage PlayStation 1”

It’s like 25 years old now… There’s people working on their PHDs less old than PS1.

I know, it’s just weird seeing something described as vintage when I clearly remember buying it new with Tekken (long box lol).

2D games would age better on them than 3D games, that’s for certain.

Heh… I was a day one PSX guy. I remember running around town making sure I had all the games I wanted. Came home with Rayman, Raiden Project, Ridge Racer, and Battle Arena Toshinden IIRC. It was quite a day.

One thing about console launches… up until the Wii I was just crazy stoked for that day one launch lineup. It was an EVENT. I don’t feel like that now, probably because you have to pre-order so far in advance and no one really ships true exclusives on day one anymore. :slightly_frowning_face:

Switch felt like an event.

Closer to one. I’ll allow it! That’s because of Breath of the Wild for sure.

Wii U too imo, at least comparatively, since there was so much exciting newness to dive in and uncover, whereas nowadays you know what to expect.

I can only hope Nintendo do it again with their next truly new platform. Though that’s probably a decade away at this rate.

SNES
PS1
GC
GBA
DS
WII
3DS
WII U
SWITCH

that’s probably my only day ones. good times.

Think that is a big reason. I may hate Nintendo for the way they will delay a game to make a more attractive launch lineup on a console but I will not argue that it works.

This current gen is the only one in the time I’ve been buying systems for myself that I did not get something at launch. But it’s not the first that I didn’t think of as an event, either at the time or in hindsight. I may be excited for a new console but not every system has a real good reason to get right away “these days” with Nintendo being an exception. And for them the primary reason for that for both the Wii and Switch was a delayed Zelda game.

It may be where I am a little older now, or because of the all-around disaster of the pandemic, but these last consoles had the most bland, uninteresting launches. The most exciting game for me on launch was Demon’s Souls, and that was a remake. Otherwise most games available on the systems were either already available on PC or older consoles. AAA exclusives are fairly rare, so there isn’t a strong argument for getting one console over the other these days.

Couldn’t agree more with the statement. I got a Series X a few months ago and since finishing Scarlet Nexus and R Type Final 2 it’s been in its box.

Just feels like I’ve bought another Xbox One, the next generation moniker is by marketing only

I’ve also not used my Xbox One on a couple of months. Snooze Central.

FYI / PSA, if you get an XStation I would be very careful or avoid using an sd card extender. I broke the sd card holder on mine using an extender from Laser Bear after the issue was known and supposedly addressed with a mounting bracket.

There is a warning at the end of the install instructions on github (link for install guides - image below). I didn’t see this when I tried to install mine so I’m not sure if it was in the instructions; too late now anyway. I’m going to play it safe and not use one.

It has to do with sd cards having a beveled edge and some (most? all? - not sure) extenders having a squared off edge that bends the pins down so the card reader can’t read the card (blinking green light ftl).

Did it break with the Laser Bear developed extender or was this with one that he was giving out before he made his own?
