Retro AV |OT| RGB, CRTs, Upscalers, and more

Does anyone have an alternative to Wookieewin from eBay for BNC->Scart breakout cables? He offered to rewire ground in my cable he sold me a few years ago because he did it differently back then, he received it, became upset at me, told me the cable was already destroyed and then told me to fuck off.

Dude is a bit unhinged. But anyone else use another seller? I asked Retro Console Accessories/Retro Access hoping she’d build one but no response yet.

Yes, they do work. But if its a PAL/NTSC issue, is there anything I can do to make it work? I just want to try to cover all the fronts.

By the way, I’m talking about the PS2/PS1 but I’m mostly dissapointed that I can’t get color from my SNES. I was really looking forward to replay Mega Man X and Super Metroid. :frowning:

I guess I will follow your advice and order some RCA to BNC converters, since they are very cheap. Can you link me one, just so I can be sure I’m buying the right thing? I’ve never used BNC ports before.

Anyway, thank you for all the tips, mate. And if you or someone else have another idea about the s-video problem please let me know. I’m definitely willing to try anything!

This will do the trick:

Here’s the gold plated version if you want to pimp it out a bit:

(but really I just included that second link so you can see both sides of the connector. any one of these you can find on eBay or amazon would be fine).

Searching for the monitor model number I get a lot of links from Brazil. Are you in Brazil? It seems that after some more searching that Brazil used a version of the PAL color standard for TVs. If your consoles are outputting an NTSC color signal then a lot of PAL monitors will have issues displaying that picture in color. The only way to get color with those systems on those monitors is by using RGB connections, which unfortunately your monitor seems to lack. So it might not matter if you hook the consoles up with a composite signal through the BNC connectors anyway I’m afraid, but it’s worth a shot since the adapters are so cheap.

If that were true though KRS, why is his PS2 working? The fact that his PS1 games work in both his PS2 and PS1 suggest they’re from the same region

Yeah I dunno, I’m just guessing. Maybe the PS2 is a PAL unit with a modchip, although it would still output the supposed NTSC games with an NTSC signal in that case right, since Playstations output different color standards depending on the software? I don’t know much about how video works on Playstations.

Retro Gaming Cables UK has breakout cables. Shipping abroad is reasonable too and his stuff may still come out cheaper than Wookiewin when all is said and done.

Thanks Mega. I’ve heard some say the UK Retro cables aren’t always quality. Are these pretty good?

Retro console accessories usually takes a few days to reply back.

Well she replied about my current order but completely ignored the request about a BNC cable so I am taking that as a no

The ones I bought work fine and haven’t failed me yet!

Has Retro Console Accessories ever sold Scart to BNC breakout cables? Maybe she’s in cahoots with Wookiewin and they don’t step on each other’s toes?!

Maybe so! I was thinking about that today… they’re both in Florida. Maybe Wookie is RCA’s nephew… who knows.

I ordered at Retro Gaming Cables and found a 10% off coupon (RETRO8). After currency conversion, shipping, everything just a hair past $33… which is cheaper than the 39.99 I paid and Retro Gaming Cables most likely won’t steal the cable from me under false pretenses and tell me to fuck off, so that’s another plus as well.

She’s sold console to BNC cables. So basically RGBs cables that plug directly into Nintendo consoles and output to BNC.

Almost all of my cables are from the UK seller and they’ve all been really solid. Been very happy with them.

Yeah which is why I thought she would be okay doing the same thing except attaching a scart end to it. Oh well

Shin-- thanks for the feedback. It is sounding like they’ve stepped up their game since they debuted now that I’m checking around the internet. I think the thing that upsets me the most is that I can’t play most of this consoles, not that Wookieewin ripped me off. But I’m sure it’ll be a short-ish wait

I think both the US and UK sellers have really upped their game. I think with more vocal people making videos about the matter, like Voultar and Bob at RetroRGB, the quality from both sellers has just vastly improved over the last couple of years.

Hey everyone! Damn, this forum software is crazy…in a good way of course. I have no idea what I’m doing.

I’ve made a few big purchases recently…specifically these two:

Really looking forward to seeing how the Analogue Super NT stacks up against my SFC Jr/OSSC combo, and I’m feeling pretty damn lucky to have been able to snag an order for an ultrahdmi board. Can’t wait to install that one.

I was at the recycle shop today and saw a very cheap 4:3 LCD monitor which got me thinking… I know with a HDMI to DVI adapter, the Framemeister can output DVI to one of these things, but i’m a bit clueless on the sound side of things. Anyone know what’s involved getting sound out of a SNES or Saturn while using DVI output? I don’t have a receiver or anything fancy, hell i don’t even have desktop speakers!

TBH i’m just more curious than anything, what RGB would look like on a low res 4:3 LCD. Anyone tried it to say how it compares with general upscaling to a HDTV? I guess i’d have no real way of knowing what kind of lag an el-cheapo used monitor would have too, but if it’s cheap enough to get going I wouldn’t mind trying it out.

On top of that… what about connecting to a monitor’s VGA port … is the same gear needed, is it a better or worse idea? I really have no idea, it’s been so long since i’ve used any of those ports!

I have a feeling that any LCD old enough to be in 4:3 is going to have a lot of ghosting when the image is in motion. As well as input lag if the image needs to be scaled. But definitely give it a shot and let us know how it works out. It could be cool for 480p games especially.

Yeah it was a Dell e177FPb, according to Amazon it was first listed there in 2009. A few other google results suggest it is 8ms as well so who knows!
