EDIT: Oh, this is the 1342. Not sure of the differences between it and the 92. Sorry!
Not familiar personally, but it looks like a pretty straightforward 600 line PVM with RGB in. A good monitor if it is in good shape. Looks like it preceded the 1354Q maybe?
I have this and the power LED died out on me…which is fine because it was annoyingly bright. Aside fron that, it switched between HDMI cables flawlessly.
naz over on shmups posted some shots on his 4k OLED where he matches his Trinitron as best they can:
Check out the large images linked in their post, they look really good.
So, regarding gaming monitors, anyone interested in the Apple Pro Display XDR? Looks like it’s going to be a really nice display that could pair well with a scaler, for Shmups in Tate mode in particular. It’s 6k resolution, so it also opens up some interesting possibilities for high quality filters in emulators.
I just know how good Apple is at nailing the display of devices. It could be worth a look this fall. I do love the way their screens get calibrated compared to most other consumer devices.
Apple doesn’t manufacture their own panels, they are usually a Samsung or LG. With that in mind, you could go buy an equivalent Samsung or LG and get the same experience for much less money.
I recently bought a Kramer VP-425 scaler which goes from component to HDMI. It’s not ideal for my setup but it was cheap and available and will be a good stop gap.
So I’m in the market for an OSSC. Given my non HDMI setup I actually think the older non-HDMI model OSSC is best for me. Where can I get one?
The newer model does everything the old model does except with an HDMI socket and audio over that as well. IMO you might as well get the newest one from www.videogameperfection.com and if you want DVI you can just get a passive adapter to go with it for very cheap. Then in the future if audio over HDMI is useful you would already have that.
I was just looking for a PVM and saw someone in my area selling a 1444QM for 40€. Condition seems okay for its age but I don’t know if the price is good or not. I also don’t know if this is considered a good model. Can’t find much about it online.
Want to play PS1, PS2 and SFC on it. Maybe Gamecube too. All over RGB. Should I bite or look for a better model?
It’s a good price IMHO. I have one as my “spare”, and I wouldn’t sell it for that price.
The only thing to consider with that model is that there is no OSD, and if you need to make any serious imge adjustments (you probbly won’t) you’ll need to open it up.
My main PVM has an OSD and does not need to be opened up to change alignment, but I’ve never changed the alignment and I’ve only used the OSD a few times.
So if you know the picture and alignment is good, and you just want to plug and play, go for it.
After buying a Kramer VP-425 that worked well, but I couldn’t get anything displayed on my 20" LCD and it wasn’t right for my recording setup.
I then bought an Extron DVS 304 DVI which I can get to display on said LCD, but everything is blue. I can’t figure out what’s going on, just the hope that I am missing something.
So I’m about to give up on scalers TBH. I don’t do much recording, so I think I’ll just scale it before upload.
Anyone aware of a list of which games on Wii are only 16:9?
Also are there any games that specifically benefit from being played in 4:3, for example if the 16:9 mode just cuts off the top and bottom of the image?

and finally a site that has a longer list of Wii games that support 16:9 but some of the games on the lists above aren’t included. I don’t know how accurate this list is.
Now to find out which ones are true widescreen and which ones just cut off the top and bottom of the screen and zoom in…
Were we done with that by the time Wii came out? Feels like we weren’t. Pretty sure the Wii could only do 480p max so even proper widescreen is still odd on it, but not absolutely sure.
Don’t really know if this is the same issue but I have two Extron Rxi units that developed a blue output issue (I think, it was either that or Red/Green). I suspect it’s failed caps but I’ve not got around to recapping those machines so can’t say for sure.
I don’t know of a single Wii game that cropped the top and bottom to do widescreen. You always get a wider field of view in widescreen modes with no loss of aspect ratio on the top and bottom of the image as far as I know.
That said, games that support both 4:3 mode and 16:9 mode will look cleaner and higher res in 4:3 since both modes output in the same resolution, it’s just that one is stretched wide using non-square pixels to fill a widescreen aspect ratio.
For games that only have a 16:9 option, even when playing on a 4:3 PVM, it’s better to set the system to 16:9 then use your PVM’s settings to force letterbox rather than letting the system output the 16:9 aspect ratio with borders in its default 4:3 setting. It will be lower resolution when output using the 4:3 setting because the borders are using pixels that are counted in the 480p or 480i output, leaving just roughly half of the resolution for gameplay.
So, the worst possible way to play is to use a 4:3 screen to play a 16:9-only game when the Wii is set to 4:3 mode. Since most consumer CRT’s don’t offer a letterbox setting, this is the only way to play some late Wii games on an SD set, so you’d be far better off playing them on an HDTV in 16:9 mode so that you get the full resolution available.
That is good to hear. Was an annoying revelation when going back to the ps2 generation. So many of the “widescreen” games are “lol we cut off the top and bottom of the screen” games.
Fun fact, the first system that I switched to a widescreen lcd tv with was the Wii. SMG was a great first widescreen game. Pretty sure I still had a 4:3 syncmaster monitor as well for pc at the time.
