Ha, ha, oh wow, if that’s true then it’s going to be hard on the wallet.
I love seeing these devices come out and improve. I’m lucky to be content with my current set up so no skin in the game besides checking them out online, but it’s encouraging to know that things and options just keep getting better and better!
Yeah you have to have some serious money for that!
Does anyone know if the Retrotink 5x could be used on a PS3 to make PS1 and PS2 games look better?
Hmm, I wonder too, maybe for PS2.
Apparently it wasn’t too much for enough people. I checked today and it’s sold out.
I watched MLiG stream with the 5x and it seemed like a great product. What impressed me the most is how great it did with so little tweaking. It is basically plug and play.
I am all CRT so I am fairly out of touch with scaler options, but watching the stream I imagined it would be ~$200 or so. It seems like prices on everything are leap-frogging in 2021. At least there are still good options under $200.
On the other hand, I just purchased the RGB>Y/C converter for $130, so what do I know!?
It sold out in like 10 minutes. I’m not sure how many units they had available though.
Is there no pre-order system ?
It doesn’t look like it right now. I haven’t followed it too closely, mostly just saw updates on Twitter. Their page says they should have more in June/July:
Next batch expected June/July with hopefully stable production and inventory.
I figured as much. I had a mild interest as I have never owned an OSSC/Framemeiester caliber of product but the price was way up there, especially since I dumped a truckload on something I’ll be posting in the pickup thread today.
Can’t wait to see mass impressions. Feel it’s almost never a good idea to go in on the very first revision of one of these enthusiast devices so wasn’t going to get one right away anyway.
I haven’t used a CRT in years, it’s all been capture cards and scalers for me, like I have a Retrotink and OSSC now.
I’m all-in on CRTs, I just love the darn things. Recently I have been playing on PC VGA monitors the most, and in the face of all the effort and cost of getting a good signal chain from all my old consoles to a hi-res display I just went with emulation (Retroarch and MiSTer, namely). Especially with Retroarch, it is just so easy to stream to my friends on Discord.
But I love knowing these options are there for the days when I either have to give up all my CRTs or they no longer work.
That’s why I really admire folks who go all out on scalers and getting their consoles onto modern displays. It is such a complex and costly endeavor, folks who are really dedicated to original hardware are the ones pushing the community forward the most.
Same here. I’m also just glad how far we’ve come since the days when emulation was literally the only option out there for decent image quality on fixed pixel displays. We’ve come a long way.
Ha, ha, yeah, I always try to use the OG hardware as much as I can over emulation when possible.
I have a Retrotink 2X and an OSSC which by themselves come to the $300 quoted price (they were purchased a year apart but still). If I were to add a GBS-C to roughly round out the features of the 5X, across 3 devices no less, I’m looking at 400+. I think 300 is not too bad when you consider that. The OSSC Pro being $500 would be madness though.
If OSSC Pro is 500 bucks I’m not sure if I would even try to buy it, heck even over 300 bucks will make me skeptical though possible.
For that price I might as well get a PVM or something. I might have been tempted by the motion adaptive deinterlacing, as I was really unhappy with the PS2 for the longest, but I found that I really like the bob deinterlacing + scanlines, it gives it a very authentic crt-like look with the flicker and everything (I posted a shot of FFX in the PS2 thread for reference).
I can see the appeal for people who want the sharpest pixels possible, but like how much sharper can you get from line 3/4/5X? It becomes diminishing returns at some point.
At least the 5X has the composite and S-video inputs (I hate having to daisy chain the Tink and OSSC just to play N64). I think the 5X would be a good upgrade on the OSSC in fairness for ~$100 more (the price keeps sounding more reasonable the more I think about it). The OSSC Pro needs some more features to justify it.
I have an OSSC that I use occasionally, but like Bozo_Cyborg I’m much more invested in CRTs. While the 5X looks great, I’ll probably just wait for a native 4k scaling option before upgrading anything.
