Is that a Monster Hunter 3rd PSP??? Funnily enough I’ve got one on the way, really looking forward to seeing how long the battery lasts compared with my 3000. Do post impressions!
It’s easily the definitive PSP in my mind. I’ve used a 2K, 3K, Go, and now this, and it blows the others out of the water. Matte finish and the handles on the back are absolutely transformative in terms of comfort, to a degree that I think I prefer it even to a vita for everything PSX/PSP. The slide pad’s depression is less significant than I expected, but it’s an improvement as well, though I prefer the vita sticks. Of course, with Infinity homebrew is a nonissue and it’s just a matter of drag and drop and run a couple programs. Really nothing negative to say. All of the differences between it and a default 3K are improvements.
And before anyone chimes in about how they just can’t stand the 3K’s screen, the only reason people notice artifacting on it is because it doesn’t have awful image retention. If you prefer smeared screens to crisp ones more power to you, but acting like that’s a fault of the 3K is silly.
This TG16 controller is in absolute MINT condition, rest assured I will be using it regularly, as it’s clearly not been touched in 30 years. There literally isn’t a single tiny scratch on the glossy plastic face.
I also found a really interesting Capcom stick that’s got microswitches in the joystick, and has detachable cables for both NES and SNES. Excited to try this out for some shooters and fighting games!
I think I got a good deal for a CIB copy @ $75 CAD. Price charting suggests around the $85 mark, but I’ve never seen one around this area for less than $100.
I resisted the PSN sale on this over new years in the hope I could find a physical copy for around the same price, which thankfully didn’t take long! I mostly got this for the arcade versions of 2, and SF3 New Gen & 2nd Impact. Convinced myself that’ll prevent me from blowing money on other ports of those, but time will tell!
2nd Impact in it’s widescreen mode fills the entire screen (I guess it’s 5x with some minor crop?) It looks stunning! Still, it wasn’t all joy, the controller options are weak (no 3x Punch & Kick assignments) and some games don’t have speed settings (though i’m not sure if they ever did, or if they’re simply not exposed in this frontend tbh).
Everyone probably knows Alpha 3 doesn’t have the bulk of extra characters, which I don’t really mind all that much. But it’s a bit crappy when you consider SF Alpha Anthology included them. That was CPS2 emulation - so they’d ported those characters back from the original Naomi version just for that release - so there’s really no excuse. That old PS2 game has so much more control over the versions as well. Ah well. Nice book includes all the character endings for every game as well.
Congrats on the awesome pickup. Seems like this game is always a little harshly criticized, but I’ve had tons of great times playing it over the years.
Yes i know it has a proper 16:9 mode, but since the CPS3 is 384x224, at 5x that equates to 1920x1120 so I that’s where i was saying there might be some crop (40px).
Hmm, everything i’ve read said it was emulation, which makes sense since they have all the same kind of dip switches and the ability to turn on/off virtually every minor change of each revision.
The screen option “original” has a 4x integer on the vertical, the other two modes (full and wide) fit the image to the vertical resolution of your screen with no consideration for integer scaling.
Using an equal integer scale on both axis will give you square pixels, with the CPS hardware that will result in a 12:7 aspect ratio which is wrong.
It’s can be hard to tell if something is a port or emulated if the developer has not explicitly said as such. it could well be that they are using the arcade ROMs but there are still ported or from scratch elements, like M2 do with their releases.
That’s true for the other games but not 2nd Impact. When you put it in Arcade Wide mode (square button before choosing the game), if you change from Original/Full/Wide afterwards, there is no change for any of those settings. Looking at some arcade videos now though, I don’t think they’re cropping, rather they’re doing 5x on both then squishing the height from 1120 to 1080. On a side note, this collection doesn’t let you choose Arcade Wide when doing Versus… wtf!
Yeah I think this is most likely. Although i’d read it was emulation before, when I played it more recently i started to wonder, particularly because of those extra Alpha 3 characters being included. But there’s no explicit confirmation that I could find. Assuming it’s the M2 like approach, then it was a pretty in-depth effort, especially for back then! It’s interesting how early emulation became the go-to solution for these kinds of collections though. Although this was a late release, that era still had a few “proper” ports of CPS2 games as well. I wonder if it was really easier to emulate than port by then!
Created a North American PSN account over the weekend and grabbed Mamorukun Curse for just $5!
I had no idea this got ported to PS3, probably because it didn’t get released in Europe. While you can tell it’s a port from all the system level load, save and trophy installation (sigh) screens I’m still looking forward to this. It seems they added a whole new mode that uses each level to the fullest.
