I’ve never played it before and I’m having a blast - definitely has some rough edges but it’s great to see the visuals really pushed to their limit (at least in terms of detail if not beauty).
Those JVC shots look really great. Wish I would have picked up a decent pro CRT a few years ago. I’ve got a B&O MX7000 set up, but it has a lot of linearity issues due to the short tube which really bothers me when playing anything that scrolls, and a nice small white sony KV-M1400D which is nice, but has a 5" slant on the top edge. Might give this one a recap at some point. Don’t really feel up to the task of freeing the rings for a complete realignment.
I absolutely love those shots from the last two sets you guys posted. Crt’s with shadowmask are clearly some of the best next to Sony with their grille sets and anyone who’s a PC crt owner will get to experience some great benefits of it.
If only those displays could accept 240p natively, we’d be all set.
Wow that’s a blast from the past. Back when I first got a computer I had a Philips 109B4 and later added a 109B5 cause they were high quality at a decent price (Sony were a little out of my league then).
They were really outstanding, but also serious desk bucklers! Unfortunately with the passing of time they moved to my work’s office and then eventually the computer graveyard.
I’ve been playing a lot of Gekirindan lately, figured I posted some shots. Game may be flawed, but it has some beautiful spritework, character art isn’t hot though.
Playing in my Aero City cab, stock Mitsubishi tube and Nanao chassis, original Taito F3 system.
If anyone has any recommendations for old monitors or TVs or PVMs to look out for I’d really appreciate it. My old console games deserve better, and old PC titles aren’t flattered by modern displays.
Donkey Kong Country 3
Super Famicom (1Chip), RGB SCART, Sony PVM 20L2
I didn’t expect to play (nevermind 100%) all three of these back to back - but here I am. I’ve never played DKC3 and I can understand why it is maligned (the music is a step down, Kiddy is the worst) but so far it is an excellent game and I am in absolute awe as to the visuals Rare was able to squeeze out of the SNES. Forget the divisive artstyle - just look at the backgrounds, these are in the same league as pre-rendered backgrounds on the PS1, an incredible technical achievement given the limitations of the SNES. Some of these underwater stages with the parallax effects and water ripple are truly a sight to behold.
Sonic 2
Sega Mega Drive VA 1 (composite video disabled), RGB SCART, Sony PVM 20L2
I’ve always cited Sonic 2 as my favourite game in the series - I think it’s the height of the art-style and music. But after playing through it again I’m kinda unsure. My favourite memories of Sonic 2 are the early stages and on reflection - the back half of this game is a bit of a slog. Still an incredible game but I’ll be interested to see where it ranks once I finish my series playthrough with CD.
