The Sunday Night Shmup thread

Recca is available on 3DS in the Virtual Console.

Recently finished Syder Arcade on a medium-ish difficulty setting, and I really think it’s worth checking out. Just a warning though, it’s pretty short @ only 6 levels.

It’s a defender-style shooter, and you have 4 ships to choose from, each with different abilities.

The developers also added all sorts of interesting graphics modes like C64, Amiga, CGA, Apple IIe, MSX etc etc so you can play around in old-school style.

Super fun, well worth trying out if you can. I had a ton of fun, and I’ll be playing it some more for sure.

Wow, that actually looks good!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this game! It’s been on my Steam wishlist for a while, but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet (pun intended). I do enjoy a quality Defend-em-up now and again, so when it hits a sale again, I might have to finally snag it.

Yeah that’s probably a good plan. As good as it is, only 6 levels is a tough sell for the price. If you can get it half-off, or in a bundle, it’s a total no-brainer.

Gunlord is coming to Switch this month!

In case anyone here hasn’t seen it yet, or isn’t aware of it, there’s a new Swtich eShop game called Switch ‘N’ Shoot that has a very old-school arcade feel, but the simplicity of a modern mobile game. It’s really fun. I wrote a review of it that got posted today, that I thought I’d share.

Awesome, forgot about that game, always wanted to try it.

Same here as it’s a sequel to Last Hope.

That intro is amazing. I love how blatantly cheesy it is. Game looks awesome!

Thanks for posting that, I’ve wanted to play that one for a while. Looks good!

Playing Soldier Blade again today and was surprised that there is an “Arcade” display option in the set up menu. Was the game originally programmed with a proper vertical TATE display or is this just slightly compressing the 4:3 ratio? Anyone know of examples of other 16-bit era console shmups that offer a vertical arcade display option? Anyways, this was cool find, wish I had a CRT I could try rotating it on:

Nice, thanks for the link.

Thanks for this, it’s the sort of game that would definitely fly under my radar if I hadn’t seen this. My eShop is set to Japan so I miss a lot of new releases since I think Nintendo’s publishing rules for that region have more red tape.

I stumbled across this display mode in Star Parodier as well.

City Connection (Psyvariar Delta, Game Tengoku, owners of Psikyo’s IP + former Psikyo staff) have announced Strikers 2020 for consoles (and also arcade according to the story in the link below). Strikers 1945 1&II Switch sales must have done really well.

That’s awesome, but give me Strikers 1999 on Switch already damn it!

That reminds me, I need to pick up some more Psikyo shmups on Switch, really happy Strikers did well.

Were the Psikyo Collections getting a Japan-region release? I guess it’d be just as easy to pick up the South East Asia version too.

Interesting, I’ve got the PC Engine Archives version on PSP so I wonder if I could set it to this mode and play with the system vertically like Hudson’s Star Soldier port.

It’s probably going to just fill more of the 4:3 window inside the 16:9 display but worth a try I guess
