Oh wow, I didn’t know that about the 1st Salamander on there, that’s pretty crazy for the Saturn version. Good to hear about Salamander 2 though.
That’s disappointing to hear about the Saturn DX pack version of Salamander 1. Oh well, I already have it on PC Engine (fave version), Salamander PSP Collection (which also has Salamander 2), and two copies of the Arcade Archives version respectively on PS4 and Konami Anniversary Collection on Switch.
I think pillar box is fine, The Saturn has issues with quite a few arcade titles in that it can’t output at the slightly lower resolution they output at. A silly oversight on Sega’s part but as long as pillar box it doesn’t mess up the art or the art’s aspect ratio I think that’s fine.
Ah ok, good to know, thanks for the clarification.
Did some Sunday night shooting with the recently acquired Elemental Master. Screens taken with my phone off the HDTV playing through a RetroTINK-2x using HD Retrovision component cables and a Sega CDX.
The game is as good as I remembered. I love the unique fantasy setting and two button shooting mechanics to fire forwards and backwards with the third button saved for a Thunder Force style weapon swap. It’s not the prettiest game on Sega Genesis but it has a wonderful charm all its own.
I just ordered Psikyo Shooting Library Vol 1 Limited Edition for Switch from Play Asia (releases on 7/25 this week) which includes arcade instruction flyers, art materials and a binder. I used to own a PCB for Strikers 1945 III/99 but regrettably sold it many years ago before JAMMA prices skyrocketed so I’m really looking forward to having an affordable, official home console version of the game with easy TATE on Flip Grip and Hori Stand.
This isn’t the same Psikyo shooting collection that was released before, was it? I thought there were 3 volumes that were already out
No, the other physical volumes were Asian region releases and didn’t come with any extras, these are special physical versions specific to Japan. Next volume releases in August and will include the Sengoku Ace related series, volume after that will be Gunbird games, Gunbarich ect and both of those volumes will also come with the same extra items as the Strikers pack (binder/case, arcade flyers ect). These will also have English language options for at least some of the games.
Whoa, that’s awesome news, I had no idea. The extra goodies are a nice bonus.
I’ve had this pre-ordered for some time from Play Asia as well. Which I hate supporting them, plus they charged me 2 weeks ago for this game, and its not out till later in the week.
That’s part of the reason I waited until now to pre-order, didn’t want to get charged ahead of time. This is my first time ordering from PA, I haven’t heard great things but couldn’t find another easy source in the U.S. Amazon U.S. has a listing from a dealer but it says delivery wouldn’t be until August. I tried to order it from NCSX today but it’s not listed on their site so far (although they have a bunch of other new items listed for July) and of course there was no answer on their phone line, just a generic “not available” voicemail. But I did get my Shooting Historica 3 gashapon box set from NCSX back in January so it was worth a shot.
Went to order it but they are not offering free shipping and the cheapest option is +20$ which is just too much.
From PA? Standard shipping for me was $10.90, odd.
I’m in Finland but they usually offer free option too, maybe it’s too expensive to qualify for that.
This has turned into Switch Shmup week for me. Yesterday I actually managed to get a physical copy of Psyvariar Delta for it, Play Asia shipped my copy of Psikyo Shooting Library Vol 1 and FedEx is claiming it’ll be here tomorrow, and then on Friday Raiden V comes in. This weekend is going to be Switch Shmup Spectacular. Say that three times fast.
Just got confirmation that mine shipped too! Didn’t give me an estimated delivery day though, maybe because I did economy shipping?
And just want to second needing to get Psyvariar and Raiden V Director’s cut, great week for Switch shmups indeed!
I heard Raiden V doesn’t have TATE mode though?
Yeah I did the more expensive shipping because Play-Asia’s regular shipping seems to take a month or so. So this time I paid for it to be shipped by fedex.
That is true, but no version of Raiden V supports tate. If I remember right it was only released on consoles and they just designed it with regular widescreen displays in mind. Which I personally think hurts it. I like the game but it’s definitely weaker than other entries in the series. I just find vertical shooters designed in a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio (versus 9:16 or 3:4) to just not work as well.
Ugh, I might be waiting a month for my Strikers pack? Yikes, wish I would have chosen the Fed Ex option now. I guess I’m too used to International purchases on eBay where the default standard shipping is usually pretty fast.
That’s too bad about Raiden V, still looking forward to playing it though.
the playable area in raiden v is wider than 3:4 by a tiny amount, can’t be much more than an extra inch horizontally on a 50" hdtv.
vertical 4:3 games are same of my personal highlights of the entire genre! soukyugurentai, mars matrix, gigawing, radiant silvergun, guardian force, zanac neo, zero gunner 2 and raystorm to me show that the competence of the developer, not the aspect ratio or scrolling direction is what makes the games work or not.
