The Sunday Night Shmup thread

I’m glad they finally credited Ser Flash for his work. I love the arrange soundtrack of Ghost Blade HD.

Ser Flash really does some great stuff, you guys need to have him on the Shoot the Core Cast again. Just saying!

I start up Natsuki Chronicle and end up playing it for three hours straight…

I have now completed Chronicle Mode on Hard mode - but my file is stuck at 92% for both Normal and Hard because I actually can’t clear the second optional Training level, crazy right?

Ending screenshots for Easy, Normal, Hard

After that I shifted my attention back toward Arcade mode, getting much further than I did before on Hard and almost almost 1cc-ing it on Normal difficulty. I was seconds away from beating the final boss’s third form! To add insult to injury my high score didn’t get uploaded to the leaderboards for some reason…

So yeah, still loving it. Arcade mode is very replayable which is a good sign, though it’s also very punishing later on if you make mistakes. Since EX Shields in Arcade mode are tied to weapon and shield pickups you can find yourself in a pickle if you get hit, especially in stages 3 and 4 which are much more managable with penetrating Wave weapons.

I also started playing Kokuga on 3DS again, it’s harder than I remembered it and it’s lost none of its appeal in the last seven-eight years.

We’re hoping to have Ser in an episode later this year.

Does anyone own the Super R-Type/R-Type III Collector’s Edition by Retro Bit? I saw one recently (new) locally and I’d really like to have R-Type III playable on original hardware. Any reason NOT to get this?

I do not have one, but I would maybe ask on shmups forum to see if the cartridge pcbs are designed right. That I would believe is the biggest concern.

I have the collector’s edition, and have played it on my SNES several times. I’m not aware of any issues with it.

Cool. It’s really hard to find much information about it other than a handful of YouTube unboxing videos. If I don’t change my mind and go with an import, I will probably pick it up locally as it looks like a cool package.

Picked up a sealed copy of Mushihimesama Futari on Xbox 360 and I’m really impressed with the quality of this port, M2 have elevated it far above what Cave achieved with their own ports.

The ‘maniac’ visual settings are something else as well. Even the presets are more than what M2 has offered in later releases, I’m really digging the phosphor dot filter for arcade mode, I still need to figure out what to do to improve output but it’s impressive nonetheless!

Is there no way to get the 1.5 DLC now? I assume it was delisted?

Never owned this port but heard it was fantastic, that filter is lovely. Really wish we could get this and the rest of the 360 Cave shmup lineup re-released on some of the modern consoles.

This was tough to do!

1.5 is the main mode that the game shipped with, 1.01 was first print only DLC and Black Label is online DLC that you can still buy. Yeah the port is amazing, worth buying a 360 for rather than wait for ports that may never turn up or be of the same quality.

I’ve been playing Blue Revolver. I like their take on the focus/special shot. You have a fast rapid shot, a slower focused shot and a special shot that you charge by destroying enemies and collecting the medals they leave behind.

I’m hoping to try Steredenn this week as it’s free with twitch prime.

Yeah, Futari is great. Definitely a game I need to put more time into.

Thanks for the clarification. If a person bought the first print/LE Edition would the 1.01 DLC still be available to download on the Japanese 360 store/XBL?

I see the option to re-download 1.01 in my download history so it should be fine.

This is the only Cave DLC delist that I am aware of…

Ahhh, so it was actually DDPR, thanks.

Now the big question: Do I finally give up on the majority of Cave’s library being ported to current systems and just buy a Japanese 360? (U.S. 360 crashed and burned many years ago)

Don’t forget that City Connection are releasing both Deathsmiles games and it sounds like they will be handling more Cave stuff beyond that, I would wait and see how those releases turn out first.
