When I was a kid I hated actually racing in Mario Kart. Something about the chaos of the items and the other racers you had to beat stressed me out a lot. I pretty much exclusively stuck to time trials.
Also when I played Pokémon I would always turn down music that was “scary” to me, including the cave music, Lavender Town, Pokémon Tower and a few others.
Are there things that when you were a kid you would avoid doing in games because you found them either too scary or too stressful? What did you avoid doing as a kid?
Confronting Bowser in 8-4 in SMB1. After seeing him throwing hammers in 6-4, which was a complete circular, and knowing (idk how) that this would be the final fight, I was too scared to even fathom what would be awaiting me at the end
I would play the whole game, even the final castle up until the point where I start to see the fire that he breathes, and I’d just put the controller down or shut off the NES. My dad used to laugh that I’d do all of that just to quit but he just didn’t get it. Are we even sure that’s Bowser over there? Exactly.
I was scared to encounter Metroids in Metroid 2. I would creep up to where they were until the music changed and then I’d have to give my brother the Game Boy!
Playing Shadow Man on the Dreamcast used to give me shivers but besides that I don’t think there’s ever been anything in a game I purposely avoided. Well, apart from sports games
It was a genuinely scary game, particularly because that fight music burst in very loud.
I always inched forward in the room they were expected and you could see a few pixels of the Metroid before the fight was triggered to be ready and not jump.
