Arcade Game/PCB Collecting: A Thread for Gamers With More Money Than Sense

After a long sleepless night , I just decided to stay up troubleshooting so I can now give a better run down:

  • I/O Board: Working
  • Transformer: Working
  • SUN PSU (Powers NAOMI, Coin Mech, I/O): Dodgy wiring connection and dubious voltages
  • Naomi 2: Faulty
  • Virtua Striker 3: Unknown (probably fine)
  • Coin Mech: Unknown (probably fine)
  • CRT: Bad Phosphor Burn In & need focus adjustment
  • Speakers: Working
  • Audio Amp: Working
  • Locks: All need removing (unable to remove or open the coin box door)

Re-assembled though 2 bolts that hold in the side covers i can not get to align properly so had to leave them out (not important and plenty other holding them on) and one of the bolts that connects the leg on the coin box side has a sheered off thread that I can’t get access to but again enough support already so not a real issue.

The Naomi 2 I managed to get to turn on by unblocking the fans that could not move:

It boots super slow and lots and lots of graphical corruption.

Slow boot is likely caused by the bad and leaking super cap and the graphical corruption is either the GPU gone bad but could potentially be bad ram.

So I tried to run the ram test and it freezes here every time:

Potentially IC9 Ram is bad and possibly some of the others after it.

NAOMI ram apparently does not like a high 3.3voltage so the PSU probably spiked its voltages and fried some of them. I have manged to run my old Naomi inside the cabinet now though I will have to refurbish or replace the SUN PSU before it is used.

Going to try to source some replacement RAM. Seen some on Aliexpress but costs around £5 a pop, could take quite some time to arrive and no real idea about the real amount I may need if that is indeed the issue.

Already started to put feelers out for a replacement CRT and I might have a few leads already.
Though feels like this cabinet is going to end up costing me a lot more than I had hoped.

Man. Keep us posted. I hope it all works out and you’re happy with it in the end.

Sometimes, putting in a little extra work makes the final experience all the more satisfying.

@Laevateinn reminded me that the SUN PSU have voltage adjusts hidden behind the front service door so I was able to tame its high voltages to make it safe to use!

The 5v was at 5.4v which I turned down to exactly 5.

The 3.3 was also rather high at 3.6 volt which I turned down as low as it could go which was 3.36v.

These high voltages coupled with the dodgy wiring to the PSU most likely were the cause the demise of the original NAOMI 2 that was inside of the cabinet…

But now with the voltages tamed and the wiring tacked into place so its not shorting, feel safe enough to insert my NAOMI + GDROM system into it to enjoy while I slowly fix the problems with the cabinet.

So now it has its permanent resting place in my living room setup:

Since Guilty Gear XX Slash is such a dark game with background the burn in is less noticeable.

Think first priority now is replacing the control panel for 6 button layouts.

Jealous! What an awesome set up! This thing is going to be sick when you get it all set up the way you want.

Yeah, getting over the screen burn a bit now though still going to get a new monitor in it sooner or later.

@Shinriji convinced me to stream a bit of the cabinet running tonight. I hate being on camera and talking on stream but it went okay I guess.

Just finished work and tired so urgh, but fun enough.

Sadly the 1p Joystick stopped working in the right direction mid play.
The 1p stick was not very responsive anyway and all being replaced soon.

2 Player side is a lot better for sure.

Dude, this rules! I know you’ve had some trouble with it but it’s awesome already. Can’t wait to see your progress. I also always enjoy getting to put a face with a name.

Thanks guys.

On the NAOMI 2 the super capacitor is badly leaking:

So I removed it, which even with a de-soldering gun is not an easy feat:

Seems the top contact part of the negative (ground) terminal has corroded right off the board:

Not a real issue and thankfully it looks like the leakage didn’t damage anything else.

Still waiting on replacement ram chips to be shipped from china so the NAOMI 2 repair is probably going to be stuck in limbo for quite some time now.

Ordered a full set of Sanwa buttons and Arcade sticks along with a replacement 2player 6 button control panel like I did with my Blast City arcade stick I made previously.

Man the prices rack up quickly. Unfortunately the person I used last time to get a control panel overlay from is out of stock at the moment and I can’t find anyone else selling them.

I also need to look into making a NAOMI Universal Kick Harness. The ones available to buy cost a bit too much considering in parts I can make one myself for peanuts.

I’ll post updates as they happen

If you want to DIY it and you’re good with only having one control panel, I’ve had success with 30mm and 24mm metal drill bits. The ones I’ve used have a centering bore guide, even better if you have a drill press.

You’ve already got the beginnings of a standard sega cabinet layout, you could save some money by just following something similar to this:

Actually it didn’t cross my mind to do this although it really should have.

I already bit the bullet on a replacement one that is pre-drilled anyway and the arcade artwork guy ran an overlay for me after I emailed him.

The current panel is a bit beat up, but having a 6 and 4 button panel wouldn’t be a bad idea if I get JAMMA/15KHZ games running in it as well at some point.

Really need a good way to get rid of the musty smell from the cabinet.
It seems to be lessening a bit but still a long way to go.

Simple Green is your friend here. A good dousing on the inside and out really reduces the smoky nicotine smell is Japan cabs. It’ll probably work for whatever smell has invaded your cab.

Definitely wear gloves though, that stuff will eat up your fingertips at the regular concentrated strength.

This bundle of expensive Sanwa parts turned up this morning:

and assembled:

Sadly I needed to rotate the top plate of the sticks and one of the screws rounded which resulted in my having to drill the darn thing out… oh well…

Since I had to dig out my drill already I decided to attempt to drill out the coin door lock that was jammed:

And we are in:

No freebie tokens or coins inside of it but the coin counter reads 73333:

Still need to either buy or make a kick harness and still waiting for all the fixing bolts to turn up.

Also waiting to hear back from someone with a tri-sync 29" monitor I might purchase.

That panel looks perfect. I really wish there were more candy cabs on the east coast. I can’t recall ever actually getting to play on one.

Lol the pain and expense of building my arcade PCB collection seems foolish even to me…so it’s good to see a thread celebrating the weird stuff we do.

I spent last week cleaning and testing a rare one of a king Samurai Shodown 64 beta development cartridge…so much fun

I think I want to get into Arcade PCB collecting. What would be the best Supergun to get?

Really there is only one choice and that is to get a HAS.

I originally used a Retroelectronik supergun which did its job fine but I can’t recommend (I will eventually put my old one up for sale).

I also absolutely would not trust the Beharbros supergun as their soldering and general production values are awful.

Whatever supergun you end up getting make sure you get a good PSU.

Forgot to post a bit of an update for my NAOMI Universal Cabinet.

Installed the new control panel but still waiting for parts to make the extra button loom so still only have 3 working buttons at the moment:

I finally tested my coin mech which should accept the following coins:
£2, £1, 50p, 20p and 10p

However £1 coins are rejected which is not unexpected since that coin has had changes to its size and weight in recent history. Oddly 20pence coins are accepted by the coin mech but the credit board is not adding credits for them.

New panel looks great!

Some more reproduction artwork turned up today:

So now time to say goodbye to the Virtua Striker 3 decals:

and hello generic NAOMI:
