Here’s the box art for the home computer version of Kung-Fu Master.

In-game, the player character doesn’t look at all like the barechested dude featured on the box art.

Perhaps the artist who created the cover art was inspired by a certain Master of Kung Fu…

Here’s another one: it’s Bloody for the ZX Spectrum!

The game’s box art promises the drug-fuelled rampage of a ghostly, vaguely cat-like vampire bat with rather thick eyebrows.
Let’s see what that creature looks like in the actual game:

It’s a flying pig.

Played Boulderdash a lot back in the day. I assumed that Rockford was some robot/alien thing. I had no idea there was so much art about him.
I read an article on HG101 about Box art and stuff. I found it rather interesting. I thought the face from Streets of Rage 2 ook like Arnie, but had no idea of the source.

Moving on.
I often wondered about this when I was a kid:
And lamented that while my Avatar probably looked badass with a halberd and his plate armour, it wasn’t reflected on my Sprite that had a stick and a shield.

Funnily enough, I was the one who suggested Bare Knuckle 2’s box art for HG101’s “Tracing the Influence” article. However, my input was only for Axel’s comparison to Van Damme. It was another poster who noticed Mr. X’s similarity to Schwarzenegger

Found another one, thanks to @Yakumo’s Battle of the Ports episode about Solomon’s Key.

I guess the chaps behind the home computer version of this game thought putting Tarzan on the cover instead of a wizard would be the key (ho ho) to more sales.
Lol that is a badass cover though

A personal favourite of mine:
Original for comparison

I saw that US box art for the first time recently (because of the game’s upcoming re-release) and it gave me a real good chuckle
Let’s take a look at Firelord!

On the box art, the hero looks rather imposing.

In-game, the player character looks about as imposing as a litter of kittens.

I thought your character was meant to be a thief/magic user… Nothing on the box cover gives you any cue about the game at all. Brilliant!
I loved the opening music of Firelord on the c64, but I had no idea what I was meant to be doing in the game.

Yeah, same here. My time with Firelord went like this: walked around for a bit, didn’t know what the hell I was supposed to be doing, quit the game and found a better one to play.
But that title tune is nice indeed!
Kinda off-topic, but another great medieval sounding C64 tune is Camelot Warriors’ opening theme:
