There’s also the Mister, which may be easier to get accurate low level emulation and analog output than an old pc.
I haven’t really been following final burn alpha’s development though.
The PC route seems the easiest way to see if you even like the library. If you play with an arcade stick on a CRT, you’re not going to miss out on much from an initial experience.
And if you fall in love with it, the other hardware options are there, and the emudriver pc has other uses.
If you go this route, it helps to be able to switch to MVS versions. Make sure you get that functionality built in somehow since some of the AES versions have limited continues and stuff.
I got the Neo sd pro, which lets you boot into the mvs version and change regions. It even has cheats.- which are very fun to use on metal slug. Had the cart for over two years now and its been a joy.
Thanks for all the input everyone, much appreciated.
I think ultimately I should just save my money. I have all the parts for the emulation PC already, I would just need to get a cable to output VGA to RGB.
If I find I’m really enjoying the library, then I can decide if it’s worth dropping the additional funds on an AES or MVS.
It’s also a great excuse to actually finish my custom build arcade stick. I have all the sanwa parts ready to go, I just need to build the wood box and assemble it.
Is there a way to “hard reset” UNIBIOS? I have a feeling it’s doing some sort of debugging on this sprite. But I haven’t figured out how to shut it off.
Resetting the system (hard reset and soft reset) doesn’t change the behavior
Edit: I fixed it somehow. Played metal Slug in the 161-1 multicart bootleg which has different default dipswitch settings and it was fine. Then played my legit metal Slug cart and it was fine too.
Oddly, the legit cart “inherited” the bootleg settings on the first boot and started on Level-8 rather than Level-4 like normal.
Glad I had that bootleg lying around. I’m sure there’s a “real” way of fixing this. But I’m happy to have it resolved this lucky way.
P.S. the culprit said sorry too. And who could stay mad at this face?
Seeing fairly positive impressions of it on twitter, someone said it’s got a little more resistance to the clicks than the original. Still waiting for them to go up for sale in the UK!
I moved last year and am finally working on a game room. It took us awhile to settle on where my collection should be and the consoles and whatnot that goes along with all that. I only have one shelf in place for now, but it is the most valued…
