Picked up Karnov, pretty excited to finally play it. Let’s plays of it made it seem kind of interesting.
I want to collect those. Great games, cool carts. I have a handful.
As a big fan of the arcade game, I was pretty disappointed with the NES version back in the day. I should give it another shot, though.
Just bought my first NES system since I was a kid! I haven’t played on real hardware for about 20 years, so i’m pretty excited.
Planning on getting the NESRGB Rev. 2 mod done as well as cap replacement, multiAV port and region-free bypass.
I was wondering a few things:
-
What SCART cables would you recommend? I use Retrogamingcables ones for my Genesis, PS1 and Saturn and have been overall happy with them - but i’m always open to suggestions.

I’m not interested in the ‘expanded audio’ mods, but are there any audio mods there that can enhance the sound? ie: make it clearer, less scratchy etc?
Let me know if you guys have any other ideas for an NES reborn noob
You might want to have the FDS audio restored.
Also bought a copy of Karnov not too long ago. Just haven’t had much of any time to play anything. Let us know your impressions.
Congrats on getting back into it! It’s a great system and the primary one I collect for. The RGB mod pulls the audio for you and in my opinion it cleans thing up nicely. There are other mods like the faux stereo mod and direct line out mods. I didn’t find them necessary after the mod and buying a good triad power supply. The previous suggestion to restore FDS audio is a must if you plan on playing games enabled with it. If you haven’t picked a modder yet get a hold of me if you want a fellow RGBer to do it for you. Good luck on it, it’s worth getting it done!
Great work.
I heartily recommend the rgb mod, it’s stunning on the right display. A small pvm, or consumer TV with rgb or component in would be my first choice. But a scaler with decent flatscreen seems to yield great results too.
For audio, unless Gimmick, Castlevania 3 (J), and FDS games are your jam, there’s probably not a lot of use for expanded audio.
I am a fan, but that’s what the AV Famicom is for.
Thanks! I did not realize the RGB mod helped with audio as well. I’ll probably be happy with that. I’m not an audiophile, but I still know good sound when I hear it.
I just ordered the triad power supply FBX recomended on the shmups forum (I seen your post there btw, wow great results!)
I did track a modder in Canada (my country). I’m assuming your in the states, and shipping is dumb expensive to the US from Canada. I really appreciate the offer though
Yep, down here in Maryland in the US. Totally understandable about the shipping. Good luck with it! You’ll be super happy. I went with the firmware that has Wavebeam, Firebrand’s awesome ntsc palette, and play choice 10.
Maryland? I’m from Maryland too!
Yep, living in Frederick!
Ha, I’m around Saint Leonard.=O
I just wanted to say fuck the crab boss in Blaster Master.
Ugh.
Yeah, I was never able to beat him on a real Nes. Did it once on an emulator though. I think the worst part of Blaster Master (outside no saving) is the fact that you loose power when hit. That means you have to complete a few of the bosses more or less without taking a hit
Yeah, Blaster Master is one of those games that was just really close to awesome. If it had a save feature it probably would be considered even more of a classic than it is.
@Dynamite_Headdy @NeoZeedeater I spent some time with Karnov yesterday … it’s pretty rough. I’m not all that familiar with the original game I think this is definitely one of those games that suffered in translation from arcade to NES. I got to the stage 4 boss after continuing a LOT. It’s OK, but the slow floaty jumps really kill it.
Crosspost from pickups:
The interesting Fami games I’ve gotten over the last few weeks (and a couple a bit before)
Yokai World, Madoola and obviously Jackie Chan are the pick of the bunch.
Also my Namco small box set is closing in.
Youkai Club is one of those games that is busted, but just works well enough (and is decently balanced) so as to be quite fun to play despite the borked controls. Great music and some decent graphics, played to stage 3 and am compelled to come back!
Wing of Madoola is very similar, kind of a Valis looking thing. Confusing layouts like Valis though. Cute but brutal.
I think most people know Jacky Chan? Unbelievably technically impressive for the time. Also interesting the developers also made Adventure Island 2/3/4!
Since beating the first Dragon Warrior, I’ve been on a slight NES binge lately. I played some Zelda and Pinball Quest during my last gaming session. And it really just reminds me how cool NES games can be.
Sure, they’re simple and often unfair by today’s standards and many would consider them rough. But I’d argue that the roughness adds something that present day games tend to lack. There’s no gaurentee that you’re going to be able to beat these games when you sit down to play them. Luck can often be a factor. Progress can often by wiped away by one mistake. It adds to the tension in a way that modern games kind of lack.
I think the NES is still my favorite system for this reason. When everything boots up and works perfectly and you manage to beat the game, it still feels like some sort of miracle that all this is possible. It’s such a watershed period in the history of the medium (for me at least).
There have been many other special moments like Mario 64 and VR, but NES just feels like this complete miracle since it comes from such primitive origins. The experiences were often all new. Everyone - developers and players alike - were really starting to figure everything out. The worlds were getting bigger than what was possible on previous hardware and things were getting streamlined compared to the more complex PC games of the time. It all makes for a special time to begin playing as a young tot (as I was back then). In a very biased way, I consider it the best system.
