I’ve tried that many SD cards over the years when I get motivated I think it might just be my unit. It did work originally but stopped at some stage. I’ve asked a few times on the krikzz forums but to no avail.
However talking about it again, I’m probably going to waste another hour or two trying another time in the vain hope of saving some cash.
Yeah it’s gotta be a faulty unit… I have a couple friends with the 2.5 as well, and I’ve never heard complaints about the compatibility of the SD cards.
My sons asked to try out the N64, they were especially curious about the controller.
Pulled the system out and it fired right up… gotta love cartridges (and Nintendo systems)!
D’awww. That’s a cute scene.
Super Mario 64 is eternal!
Does anyone know if Space Station Silicon Valley’s PAL release is full speed?
This list (PAL optimised list - Nintendo 64 Forever) has it down as full screen, but a ? for speed. DMA Design’s other game, Body Harvest, is both full speed and full screen, and since they, like Rare, are a British developer, would it be safe to assume SSSV is full speed too?
On a related note, I’m planning on revisiting N64 games on real hardware again, now I have a good CRT. It’s been a long time coming. I’m thinking about also picking up a Japanese model with some games to escape poor PAL 50hz conversions, does anyone have any cool recommendations for games?
So far I’m thinking of trying Chamleon Twist, the first N64 Pawapuro title (Powerful Pros 4 I think), the first N64 Konami football title, Jikkyou World Soccer 3, and of course Mario 64 Shindou edition.
Tsumi to Batsu, Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh, Rakuga Kids, Densha de Go! 64, Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Sin and Punishment dude. Also, prepare to have your mind blown with how much N64 benefits from a crt display. More so than any other console in existence.
Can’t believe this wasn’t on the ‘top of my head’ list I was making! Played it on Wii Virtual Console and always wanted to go back to it. As good as the sequel is it just goes on too long to make high score chasing a daily affair, and I’ve always wanted to revisit its predecessor.
Added the other games to my list, looked into Rakuga Kids (another game I forgot existed!) and had a shock when I saw the bear tank character, didn’t realise he was originally from this game. He was my mainstay in Konami Krazy Racers back in 2001.
Wave Race 64 Shindou.
Star Fox 64 with really good japanese voice acting.
Mario Kart 64 and its driving at best.
F-Zero X, the best game ever.
Kirby 64, so good, so classy, so cute.
If you use composite video I recommend to try to turn down the sharpness setting of your CRT, it’s beautiful, and maybe the color (gracious neon colors with RCA cable) if you find them too overwhelming, too bleeding. And stay with the original controller!
Interesting about Star Fox 64, keep forgetting the original voice acting would have been recorded in Japanese! It’s on my list.
Any games which look especially good in composite? I’m planning on using the Hori S-Video I got with my Super Famicom primarily.
I never had the chance to display S-Video, but comparing to RGB N64, when avoiding over-bleeding colors and brightened noisy flickering edges with the setup I’ve mentioned, I personaly prefer composite on CRT TV with any game for the image cohesion. The integration of 2D sprites like drivers in Mario Kart 64 or explosions in Star Fox 64, the glowing magic from Ocarina of Time (all its 2D works like texturing are awesome in composite), the futuristic neon colors of F-Zero X, the baby roundness of Mario in SM64 etc
I’m interested to try it out now, thanks!
Can definitely see it benefitting games which had heavy use of 2D sprites to blend in with 3D backgrounds, like Mario Kart 64 and Pawapuro.
I don’t really think composite is necessary to have that stuff blend in properly. You just need a CRT, preferably with a low amount of TV lines. Even with RGB, the N64’s image never gets very sharp.
But to each their own. Certainly, N64 games are not meant to be razor sharp.
This is my experience with N64 RGB so far. I’be bought an RGB modded N64 and returned to the composite image. Of course the superior RGB signal has also many benefits, and I understand than other people will prefer that one.
Hey it’s all about personal preference.
For me the N64 via RGB on a 600 TVL PVM is authentic but not at the expense of clarity.
Yep, like me, I would take RGB over composite any day as composite never looks that great on my capture cards. Glad I got my N64 RGB modded to use it on the OSSC.
I saw there’s a new HDMI adapter for N64.
It doesn’t upscale, but does line-double, and can run in either composite or S-video. With optional “smoothing”.

edit: adding video
Looking forward to receiving my Japanese N64 at some point next week! Still got a few games to pick up but I’ve already got enough to get going again. Really excited about this.
That’s the 1st I’ve seen of the Kaico version of that.
