Nintendo 64 |OT| YOU COULD ZOOM IN, ZOOM OUT, AND CHANGE ANGLES!

Looks like someone is making a hardcore replica of the N64 stick with improved materials (durability), I really hope they nail it

Given the post above, I now feel a bit silly for having purchased a brand new N64 controller. But still: EXCITE!

Wow. NiB n64 controllers have become holy grails at this point.

The original grey color is still my favorite.

I was surprised by how available they are on Japan’s auction sites - I guess the shadow of N64’s failure there has its upsides!

It was mind blowing using this thing, as the N64 stick, despite its rudimentary plastic top, still offers what feels like perfect combination of distance and resistance under the thumb. Makes controlling anything in 3D space an absolute joy and an interesting contrast to the more tactile GC and Wii sticks.

I wonder if the Switch going with grey Joy-Cons is a throwback to N64 design language?

I wouldn’t be surprised. The Left Joycon’s Directional Buttons also directly borrow the arrow symbols from the N64’s C-Buttons

I think all of their console design language tends to heavily borrow from the past. For example, the N64’s default controller/console, itself, incorporates the SFC design language by having the same button colors (although in different locations):

SFC’s console shell heavily incorporates the grey from the international NES design.

GCN’s indigo color harkens back to the Super Nintendo’s purple buttons.

Etc.

I do agree that Switch’s grey Joycons are meant to evoke the classic Nintendo “grey and black” aesthetic we’ve seen with the NES and N64.

As I will probably never do a 1cc in hard at this rhythm, I made a quick run on normal:

I’ve been playing the Turok port on Switch, which is awesome with gyro, you can be a complete cappa. But it was just released on Switch Online too so did some comparisons.

So weird how the original uses reverse Y axis (the correct way) with no way to change it. That was the default for so many years and then it just randomly flipped. Also it auto re-centering vertical look is an element of the times.

Having grown up with the n64 and the FPS on that system, I have noticed my left thumb can play inverted no problems but any modern controlling games which looks with the right stick, I have to play non-inverted.

Oh you

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

It is funny how it was standard and then the standard randomly swapped.

I was reminded of the optical nature of the N64 stick sensors the other day and it blew my mind. Always wondered why the sticks are so precise despite them on paper having less granular measurements per axis.

I wonder if a lot of third party sticks used more traditional means - the acceleration of the HORI minipad stick is terrible. But software must too play a role, since the Switch NSO software doesn’t play nice with the N64 stick either.

I’m actually quite surprised at how good S-video is for this console. I’m using simple $10 Gam3Gear cables and comparing it to the Mister N64 core which is outputting component to the same TV and switching between inputs, they are almost identical

I’ll try to get some shots, but it led me to question the expensive and time consuming RGB mods or RGB modded consoles selling for crazy amounts on eBay

On n64 the sharpness increase is barely perceptible but you will get slightly more accurate colors from RGB over s-video. 2d elements like sprites may be a bit more defined at times too. But I don’t think it’s worth going out of your way for though

that’s exactly what I saw, slightly punchier colors (I think my TV also has separate settings for S-video and component), and some of the 2D elements were ever so slightly more detailed or “3D” if that makes sense, but as you say it was so minor that I just couldn’t imagine going out of your way to achieve that

Even more mind blowing is how S-Video is imperceptible from composite:

man I thought it was just me. when my S-video cables just gave up on me I had to go back to composite until I got a replacement and I swear I could barely tell a difference. maybe the colors bled ever so slightly

the Saturn and N64 have absolutely superb composite and S-video signals. meanwhile PS1 composite has a lot of dot crawl and the step up to S-video is absolutely massive (its S-video is almost too sharp imo)

Scroll up to posts around Feb2023 about N64 composite…there’s a quote from rama3 about PS1 also removing composite filters in later revisions :eyes: I’ve not had a chance to look into this but I wonder if there’s a model with both the newer GPU AND these filters.

Such a cool video, this guy is really squeezing out some impressive performance for his own game/engine. He theorise that a SM64 that runs at 60fps on a real N64 is possible.

I’ve been following his Water Wednesday Twitter posts where he’s rating the water in every N64 game that features it.

These have been great! I can’t wait until Wave Race 64 gets decompiled and new tracks start appearing, even to this day the water physics and handling model feel outstanding.
