Playdate - new handheld gaming system, with a crank

Got my Playdate yesterday! Initial impressions have me swooning over the playfulness of the crank and form factor, and drooling over the motion resolution of the screen - no ghosting!

An hour from now!

I won an award at the above, Technical Achievement for Daily Driver. Great! It should release this year.

Working on some smaller games, and Sparrow Solitaire final update should ship soon.

Playdate now has an on-device (and on-web) store called Catalog with 16 games featured at launch.

Reviews of all games in Catalog, not written by me.

Congrats! It’s amazing that you’ve got other games in the pipeline too

Well deserved! Definitely the best use of physics on the system to date and I’ve only played the demo!

Still no final driving game.

BUT

Final version of Sparrow Solitaire is out. $10

Oh cool! Was that a level editor at the end?

Looks more fleshed out than the demo build I’ve been playing.

Yes, built-in level editor and full modding/user-generated-content capability!

This final version makes the early version feel like a demo. If you bought the early version on itch this is a free update.

During prototyping and development we played a ton of Mahjong Solitaire games on everything from original Macintosh (the first Shanghai), through variations on almost every other platform including PC Engine, Gameboy, Windows, Atari Lynx, 3DS, SNES, MD, Switch, X6800 and more. We decided that we could confidently set new ground and we think you’ll agree that we did!

We believe this is the first retail quality game on Playdate in terms of scope, features, polish and game feel. 10 music tracks, 13 tilesets, 25 backgrounds, and 200+ layouts. Be sure to check out the changelog!

Can’t wait. Sounds like you guys worked hard on it. I dig the idea of the 2 player update too. How do I redeem the free update? Is it through the itch website then sideload it?

Edit: also I really hope they release the magnetic desk stand soon for Playdate. I don’t know why but I need that custom pen. It makes no sense since I’ll literally never write with it. But it just looks so nice as a unit for a desk.

P.S. Just got the Catalogue for playdate (aka the on-system storefront for games that just released for those that don’t know). The music is incredible - we’re talking Wii Store levels of good if not better.

And Sparrow Solitare is prominently featured as the third tile :moyai: :grinning:

Additional Edit: Never mind re: above. I was able to side load the full Sparrow Solitaire update for free from Itch. It’s downloading now.

:loudspeaker: Playdate roll call :loudspeaker:

Is it just me and @Peltz?

I’m looking for people who’d like to kick the treads of my latest game.

Based on a recent X68000 indie game by a guy I know, andwith his blessing, I’ve made my own take on the concept for Playdate. I’m drawing all the graphics through filled shapes! No bitmaps loaded at all.

I’ll have to add some for the launcher card eventually.

If you’re interested in the details I wrote a blog post about how I made the game. It’s only 39KB which is smaller than the 40KB of first NES ROMs.
