Post a screenshot of the retro game you just finished!

Just finished Panzer Dragoon Saga. Awesome game.

I love Panzer Dragoon Saga. Like Phantasy Star 4, it is just the right amount of everything with no filler. It has one of my favorite endings too. I’m super happy that I’m lucky enough to have a copy.

Robocop 2 (Arcade), Data East

A surprisingly decent game, as far as licensed arcade games go. I could probably 1cc if it I gave it a few weeks.

Very clean sprites, and a good amount of the trademark Robocop sounds. It’s always funny to go back and see these super violent 80s and 90s movies marketed to kids - this one is toned way down.

It does suffer from repetitive mechanics, although the game breaks up the monotony with some NAM style shooting sections. The music is great, but it’s disappointing the third time you hear the same track.

The head producer of this, Takaaki Inoue, has his last producer credit as Windjammers.

I wanted to start buying every retro game that I finish as a way to show what I’ve beaten and keep a self imposed restriction on spending. Of course I start with one of the most expensive games, lol. I’m about 3 hours into Grandia, way more affordable, lol.

Been playing Umihara Kawase again, this time via its inclusion in Sayonara Umihara Kawase Chirari. Just cleared the ending from field 55.

I’m struggling to decide on whether I like this even more than Umihara Kawase Shun on PlayStation now - both benefit massively for a razor sharp focus on playful physics, level design and tutorial design. The original is ever slightly purer since it’s missing FMV sequences and vocal songs - but I wouldn’t label those as unnecessary either…

I just finished Landstalker again. I love this game and treat it like an honorary Shining title but there are a few places that are extremely frustrating.

Been playing the story mode on Magical Drop III lately - great little game. Less brutal than I expected given Money Idol Exchanger’s quickly escalating arcade difficulty, but I haven’t tried the hardest difficulty setting yet…

I just finished Aria of Sorrow for the first time, and what an amazing game. I even took the time to get all of the enemy souls. I need to replay SOTN because at the moment I think this might be the best Metroidvania of all time.

It’s one of the best, congrats on your first play through! Now go get all the items too

I think I did get everything, unless there are some secret drops?, I bought everything from the shop and completed the map.

Anyway, I’m hankering for a Julius run but I think I might wait until insurrection industries GC component cables come out so I can do it on the Game Boy Player.

My man! :+1:

I ordered a GBA consolizer kit. This will be my first play through on it.

I was very tempted by the consoliser but couldn’t justify the cost as I already have a GC with digital out, a Game Boy Player and an SD media launcher.

Make sure you post your impressions when you get yours up and running!

Nice one.

How’d you go on the death fight? From memory, that, and the Tinman soul have me the most trouble.

I have an abandoned run of Dawn of Sorrow, as it didn’t grab me in the same way as Symphony, Aria, and Metroid Zero did.

I’m 90% on my Hollow Knight file, and it is a strong contender to top my personal Metroidvania favourites.
And it is the mechanical similarities to Symphony, and Aria which I think contribute the most to my feelings toward it.

“OK, the idea is to jump around to wherever you can reach on this huge map, thwacking everything you can with your sword. Go!”

So much fun.

The death fight didn’t give me too much trouble, I think I used the soul to extend my jumps to leap over his sickle and the shield soul to deflect the projectiles.

I started up Dawn of Sorrow immediately after, but I think I might take a break before jumping into another Castlevania, seems like more of the same so far which isn’t necessarily a bad thing I suppose.

I bought Hollow Knight on sale on Switch not long ago and have been meaning to give it a go, I’ve been trying to get into Axiom verge but I’ve mostly been getting bored in that game.

In terms of quality, I can not stress enough how polished Hollow Knight is. The hand drawn animation, incredible sound design and score are enough to give it your time.

It is a tough game, and will punish impatience and carelessness, but I fell like that’s part of the experience. I recommend reading only what’s in the manual, which should be enough to get you started, and giving a few hints for early progression.

Mastering the mechanics after feeling powerless, fragile, and ill equipped was exhilarating. And it rewards that mastery with harder challenges, and opportunities for creativity, not with abilities and items which negate the need for skill and finesse.

Finished Castlevania: Bloodlines for the first time. What a great Castlevania game and absolute technical achievement on the Genesis.
