Post a screenshot of the retro game you just finished!

3DS version is fun, if a bit light on content compared to most of the others. It felt a bit empty and lacking in humour too. Plays well though.

I wonder if the Japanese version has the same content?

The 2D games are pretty short once you figure out how to advance at some roadblocks. ALBW tasks are especially quick, feeling almost like an arcade game at times. I need to replay that one some day.

The 3D games take way more time, but are much easier from a combat and puzzle perspective. Majora’s Mask is its own thing though. I needed way more patience to really get into that game. It took me almost 15 years to really sit down and play it. But once I did, I really understood what the hype was about. It’s still one of the most unique games I’ve ever played.

I really think all of the games are worth giving a chance - they each offer something different. There’s no one “correct” Zelda formula. Even the DS games have their charm if you can get past the controls.

BotW was my absolute favorite though - despite not being that into open world games. That game just has a little something “extra” special going for it.

Yeah I would put Link To The Past into the easy category, but I’ve also played through it a dozen times, and it’s probably my favourite game of all time.

I’ve played a couple hours into Minnish Cap, and both Ages games too, but I am a little crazy and didn’t want to get too far in to them until I had finished with Link’s Awakening.

If the 3D is good I might give it a punt. Did it have an unlocked framerate?

Link to the Past is probably the most balanced game of them all from a difficulty perspective. The really nailed so much in that game.

It benefits from being played on the N3DS with forced higher CPU. I played it in 3D, worth it. Some things are designed with it in mind.

That’s good, I remember video gameplay of it showing a ropey framerate.

Yes! I wouldn’t play it on O3DS.

Much like PAL Super Runabout the sluggish framerate really isn’t fun.

Since I’ve been on such a Game Gear kick lately: If you’re after some more Zelda II action when you’re done with it check out the Game Gear exclusive Ax Battler: A Legend of Golden Axe

It’s essentially a Zelda II clone, and one of the best exclusives on the Game Gear (or so I hear, I haven’t played it yet).

Oh interesting. I’m always looking for Game Gear exclusives. This sounds like something up my alley.

Topolon, a lost Japanese cellphone puzzle game recently released again on the Switch.

It’s maddeningly addictive, and I finally cracked it and got a top 3 leaderboard ranking on Endless Mode, which puts you under increasing pressure with stricter and stricter time limits between levels.

Yep, plus I love Dark Souls as well.

3D Galaxy Force II! Cleared it several times today, but this time I did it with the difficulty set to max (5 stars), energy depletion sped up, and starting energy turned down. This 3DS conversion really turns the wow factor up to a new level, turning off the 3D doesn’t do the graphics justice.

As M2 mentioned in interview, it’s almost a shame this way of conveying 3D environments became a lost art. With stereoscopic 3D it produces a very detailed surrounding effect that is very different to that from polygons, it has this mesmerising speed to it that I don’t think I’ve really been wowed by since F Zero GX 17 years ago.

I had a few games of 3DS Galaxy Force 2 last night. Astonishing is the only word.

Yea the 3D in that game in phenomenal. It’s some of the best on the system.

I found the gameplay to be a bit difficult to get into though. Got any tips? I seem to die too fast in that game.

Do everything to get your energy bonus up as much as possible. What works for me is keeping full throttle as much as you can (hold down the L button or nudge the C-Stick down), as well as your standard shot. And make sure to lock on to 3 enemies (6 when fully powered up) as much as possible before launching any missiles.

The other pain point seems to be running out of energy before your next top-up, it might be worth avoiding some enemies entirely in the later stages since colliding with their ice/stone formations will slow you down considerably.

I one-credited Super C

Certainly one of the biggest arcade to home jump considering arcade Super Contra is a loathsome piece of shit and Super C is one of the better game in the series. Super C takes what was solid about the NES contra and enhances it with the shoddy behind-the-back sections replaced by better overhead stages, more varied stages, bigger and more complex bosses blablabla. However…

This playthrough made me realize how dumb the respawning in these NES contra is. Your character reappears in midairs and the games are so fast paced you’ll likely still be holding left or right, frequently resulting in your character immediatly diving back into a pit. Gah!

Finished GG Aleste today via Aleste Collection. A technically impressive portable shooter, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it was significantly more difficult on the hardware itself given the inherent motion blur and lack of contrast of the screen.

You can make the game harder for yourself by not triggering slowdown by firing too many shots, this is probably a good tactic for going up the leaderboard rankings among 1’CC players (once you clear all stages you’re ranked on time, not score), but otherwise it doesn’t really offer a ‘traditional’ challenge, though Special difficulty does increase the number of projectiles since defeated enemies unleash them.

Cleared Master System Power Strike II without continuing!

Thought this game was top class if only let down by the first two stages being a bit dull with familiarity. Past there the worlds you visit don’t let up, and the bosses are excellent.

Didn’t realise this only released in Europe, speaks a lot for the popularity of the Master System long after Mega Drive launched.

Nice! I’ve only played the first one.
