PS3 / Xbox 360 Appreciation and Collecting Thread - Are They Retro Yet?

Thought so. Been trying to find one to pair with the system but can’t find any. Can’t even find a shell to make my own.

So for the last week or so I had been keeping my eye out for a phat/older slim PS3 that was on 4.82 and could run CFW. On a whim I fired up the spare PS3 that the family uses for movies and wouldn’t you know, the damn thing hadn’t been updated!

Are there any recommend guides you’d point me to? I saw the post from @Peridot but it’s over a year old and not sure if things have changed since then. I did some initial Google searching and found some options, but nothing as nice or authoritative as something like Plailect’s 3ds.guide (which has probably spoiled me).

what firmware is on it. This will determine what you need to do.

It’s on 4.82

this is the tutorial I used

Thanks, I’ll check that out. I’m usually cautious about video guides since they quickly become out of date (and not always easy to follow), but can’t argue with success.

@asmith906 Thanks for the link, everything went smoothly today. This is going to make messing around with RPCS3 a million times easier.

Awesome, I actually just got through working on a PS3. I really need to try out RPCS3.
I hear Demon’s Souls runs pretty good.

A look at Xbox 360 prototypes.

Looks very Alienware.

Agreed. From afar you would think its is a mid-sized tower.

My fave is the one with the bulging green old Xbox logo, middle in the bottom row

Not a fan of any of those. I think the final design was likely the best one.

But the dark grey one 5th from left of bottom row basically is the final design (but upside down and slightly smaller)

I’m glad they rebranded the whole look and feel of the Xbox for the 360. The original Xbox’s branding hasn’t aged well, to be frank, though I still appreciate how different it was from the PS2 and GameCube.

Osaka-based Hers Design Inc. also worked on the Xbox 360’s industrial design, I wonder how much they contributed toward it.

It’s surely not coincidental that many of Astro Studios’ concept designs are far from the final thing in terms of friendliness, I wonder if Hers Design helped to come up with the friendlier image and branding that we saw in the final machine.

Edit: Just found this interview with Astro Studios, it seems Hers Design provided consulting. Really happy both teams evolved the design far beyond those early concepts shudders. https://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/130758/interview_astro_agogo_.php

I’ve been returning to my 360 the past month to play some new STGs and ones I didn’t have time for (the wonderful Bangai-O Missile Fury!) and I have to say Microsoft enforcing a 4MB patch size limit is a blessing. Really fast to get into new games, or re-downloaded games, and if there is a substantial update it’s on the MS store so it can be downloaded while you play.

I was amazed at the size of some of my library when redownloading. Really small and well optimized games. What changed?

I miss when limitations would be seen as a good thing.

Still rather absurd that Namco’s arcade titles are 900MB each(!) on PS4, with the same XBLA games weighing in at a small fraction of that while still offering HD and leaderboard support,

Did Sony shut down the PS3 PSN store?

I tried accessing it on my ps3 and the “Best of PS3” category is empty, Games is empty, search doesn’t work, “Just for You” only recommends PS4 games and the only place I can see stuff is under Free.

Uh, what? That’s fucking crazy if so. I went to the site and it’s still up for “Best of PS3” so I wonder too.
