PS3 / Xbox 360 Appreciation and Collecting Thread - Are They Retro Yet?

They’re running a sale on “retro” right now that includes a lot of PSOne Classics on PS3/PSP so I doubt it? Maybe a snafu on their side?

Still hoping (probably in vain) that PS5 will be announced with PS3 BC. It would be really disappointing if CFW and emulation become the only choices for keeping the PS3 alive.

Ps3 psn store has always been garbage. I just buy from the web store and use the download list

Yeah me too! I just checked it for a lark on ps3 and it’s in a pretty bad state.

Picked up a 360 S (matte 2011 revision) which appeared to be in great condition. A rarity, that.

Hope it’s a lot quieter than my Xbox 360 Elite, which has always had a very ‘metallic’ fan noise when playing installed games off the HDD. I’ve read some 360 S power bricks are loud.

My 360 S power brick is silent thankfully. I think the system itself will die eventually because I once had weird GPU artefacts and more and more people are reporting failures on the 360 subreddit but I have a modded Jasper as a backup.

My 360 S died last month, now I’m on a 360 E.

They’re dropping like flies :frowning:

Damn it, I really like the shape of the S. I was thinking of getting a second 360 and j-tagging so I can have box art offline; tired of them disappearing because the 360 isn’t connected to the internet. I guess it’ll have to be an E.

I also had an S die.

I took the shell and put an E in it. It’s mostly the same except the power brick connector is more like a barrel jack (fits within the same hole though) and the AV connector is replaced with a 4 pole headphone jack w/ composite only.

My S was giving me the GPU artifacts for a few weeks before it really just gave up on life and wouldn’t stay on for more than a few mins.

If you don’t mind having a louder system, Jaspers are really good systems to RGH. They seem to be standing the test of time better than the S.

Hold the phone, you can put an E in an S? …but if the Jaspers are also reliable then I could use my PGR face plate again. Thanks for the info, everyone.

I play a drive-flashed early non-HDMI model 360 and am interested to modify it so I can play RalliSport Challenge 2 on it. What are my options?

If you’ve kept it on an older firmware, you can JTAG it. Otherwise you’ll have to RGH or R-JTAG it.

Don’t expect too much from the OG Xbox emulator, removing the whitelist to enable other games while interesting still doesn’t result in a viable OG Xbox game player: expect slowdown, audio glitches and crashes.

Thanks for the great reply.

Given the last paragraph I won’t probably won’t do it at this time.

I decided to hook my ps3 up last night and played some Scott pilgrim. I forgot how brutal that game was.

Interesting comments about the 360 S further up the thread, it’s a shame it’s less reliable than the older Elite.

My 360 S arrived yesterday and I’m really happy with the condition of it, everything in the box was retained as well. It was like unboxing a brand new system.

What impressed me was how fast the setup process was (pick country, parental controls on/off, then WiFi), and how fast redownloading your profile and old games can be, since you never have to leave the dashboard and open another app to access your download list. Transferring data locally was also much easier than I anticipated, with a great interface that splits your data by category, and lets you check off what you want quickly. Like that 4MB patch size limit, a good reminder of what MS got right with the system in a transitional period to downloadable and installable content.

As for the system itself, while I prefer the more rounded lines in the original 360 design over the angular shape of the S, it certainly is a more refined system. Much quieter than my Elite, too, playing games on the S using the disc drive is as quiet as playing games on the Elite off the HDD! Though the power brick certainly makes a gentle whooshing noise which is disappointing, the overall noise level is much lower than my Elite, and much more pleasing to the ear due to its low pitch. It’s quieter than my PS3 Super Slim, which surprised me.

Whether a 360 is an Elite or not isn’t what to look out for, it’s the board itself that is important: https://beta.ivc.no/wiki/index.php/Xbox_360_Revisions

Of the old 360s, only a Jasper is worth seeking out.

You’re right, wrong terminology. I bought my first 360 in 2010, it was a black-chassis Jasper unit manufactured in the same year. 150 watt power supply should confirm it’s a Jasper right?

I recently got a VGA cable for my 360, and of course on a native panel the games look so great.

But, my panel is 4:3 and many games are widescreen-only (much more of a problem than it is on Wii)
